NEWS

Spotted on Shelves...

New and Improved! Mann's Rainbow Salad - How could this gorgeous shredded veggie mix get MORE amazing? The slaw now features adorable li'l broccoli florets. Awwww! Chomp on a 3-oz. serving for 25 calories, 0g fat, 25mg sodium, 5g carbs, 2g fiber, 2g sugars, and 2g protein (PointsPlus® value 0*). Currently at Walmart, Safeway, and Meijer locations, it will be available nationwide soon. Crunch, crunch...

New Flavors! Fage 0% Greek Yogurt - YAY... Fruit flavors that were previously only available in Fage's 2% line now come in 0% (a.k.a. fat-free) varieties! Each 5.3-oz. container -- complete with a sidecar of fruity goodness -- has 120 calories, 0g fat, 45 - 50mg sodium, 17 - 18g carbs, 0g fiber, 16g sugars, and 13g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). So spoon some Strawberry, Raspberry (a new flavor for Fage), Cherry, Peach, or Blueberry deliciousness over your yogurt. These are rolling out now, so look for 'em! Supermarket yogurt sections just keep getting cooler...

Green Giant SteamCrisp Canned Corn - Steamed veggies are the way to go... even when they're canned. No, these cans are NOT meant to be put in the microwave and steamed -- the veggies are pre-steamed for optimal taste. Plus, the SteamCrisp process requires less water and packaging. The whole line rocks, but we love the Mexicorn best of all -- a half-cup serving has 90 calories, 0.5g fat, 270mg sodium, 19g carbs, 1g fiber, 6g sugars, and 2g protein (PointsPlus® value 2*). Look for SteamCrisp cans on store shelves everywhere.

The Cheesecake Factory Goes International! (New SkinnyLicious Options!)

When we heard that CF added a bunch of fresh new items to its menu, we took notice; when we saw that five of them are SkinnyLicious, a.k.a. under 590 calories, we got excited. There's the 300-calorie Santorini Farro Salad (with beets, feta cheese, and tzatziki sauce), soy-glazed Island Grilled Chicken for 580 calories (topped with macadamia nuts, and served with veggies and rice), a spicy 550-calorie Shrimp Creole dish (with onions, peppers, and rice), SkinnyLicious Chicken Enchiladas with a pickled-veggie salad for 590 calories, and the 540-calorie SkinnyLicious Pasta (with marinara sauce, chicken, and basil). They sound delicious! While we're glad we were able to get the calorie count of each dish by swinging by a nearby location, we really wish The Cheesecake Factory would make all the nutritionals (including the nowhere-to-be-found total-fat stats) available on its website. We'd like to take this opportunity to put our plea in a limerick...

Hey, Factory of Cheesecake...
You're forever refusing to make
Full nutritional information
Available to the nation
JUST DO IT, come on, for Pete's sake!!!

OK, so we're not amazing poets. But the request stands! BTW, click here for our review of the original SkinnyLicious menu!

What's the Skinny?

Bar None? More Like Bar ALL!

Raising the Bar... Best New Snack Bars!

We're not gonna lie. We've been hitting the bars pretty hard these days... the SNACK bars! And these new items have definitely earned some love, attention, and words of praise. (Don't worry; we're done with the poetry... for now.)

Kraft MilkBite Milk & Granola Bars - No joke, these are amazing -- crazy-yum with a good amount of calcium. The texture is tender and chewy, and the taste is mild, sweet, and creamy. Plus, the flavors rock: Strawberry, Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Oatmeal Raisin, and Mixed Berry. And the little mascot guy is INSANELY cute. Each bar has 130 - 140 calories and 5 - 6g fat (PointsPlus® value 3 - 4*). Find these refrigerated in the dairy section.

Decadent New Flavors! Gnu Bars - These dessert-inspired varieties are finally on the market: Blondie, Blueberry Cobbler, and Carrot Cake. Each soft 'n yummy fiber-ific bar has just 130 - 140 calories and 3 - 5g fat (PointsPlus® value 4*). Grab some at the store or order a bunch online.

Health Warrior Chia Bars - Thanks to chia seeds, these delicious bars are loaded with nutrients: omega 3s, omega 6s, fiber, protein, and more. Each bar has only 100 - 110 calories and 4 - 6g fat (PointsPlus® value 3*). They come in Chocolate Peanut Butter, Coconut (THE BEST), and Acai Berry. Available online and in very select store locations. (Click and see if there are any near you.)

And keep an eye (and a tongue) out for new flavor options from a couple of HG favorites: Soyjoy bars in both Cranberry and Dark Chocolate Cherry, and Corazonas Oatmeal Squares in Blueberry as well as White Chocolate Macadamia Nut. We got sneak tastes and are in serious love with 'em. Now get snacking!

The Buzz...

It can be hard to find the motivation to work out when it feels so much like, well, WORK. But a new trend of "party workouts" is reportedly merging the nightclub with the health club! Saturday-night sweat sessions? Disco balls AND treadmills? Martini glasses of vitamin-enhanced water? WOW! ***Smash Your Food! No, it's not a new way to make Fiber One breadcrumbs -- it's an app that shows you how much sugar, salt, and oil are in foods like burgers and milkshakes after you virtually smash them. Like Whac-A-Mole... only informative. The interactive game earned an honorable mention in Michelle Obama's "Apps for Healthy Kids" contest. And as easily entertained adults, we like it too. (BTW, um, we started this snack-slapping thing back in 2004 with our Whack-A-Snack!) ***Exciting new product alert... The company behind some of the world's most delicious mayo has teamed up with our favorite hot sauce to bring us this limited-edition condiment: Hellmann's/Best Foods Spicy Buffalo with Frank’s RedHot Flavored Reduced Fat Mayonnaise! The name's a mouthful, but we can't wait to get this spicy spread into our mouths. Find it nationwide at Walmart, Target, and select supermarkets. ***Find yourself skimping on sleep? It could be sabotaging your weight-management efforts. In a recent study, one group of subjects slept an hour and 20 minutes less per night than the other group; the subjects who got less sleep consumed an average of 549 additional calories each day. EEEK. Get those Zs, people... That's all we've got. HG out!
