GIRLS BITE OUT

When not planned properly, lunch can get a person into trouble. Read up, and chew safely...

No Time to Prepare? Try These Grab-n-Go Eats!

We all know about frozen meals like those from Lean Cuisine, Amy's, and Kashi; we constantly enjoy Campbell's and Progresso's microwaveable soups. But here are a slew of other options you should know about...

Evol. Teriyaki Chicken Bowl - All the appeal of quick-serve teriyaki bowls, but this all-natural dish has much better stats. And the brown rice is cooked to PERFECTION. Only 250 calories and 6g fat (PointsPlus® value 6*). Click to find!

StarKist Lunch To-Go Albacore - This shelf-stable supermarket staple has your back. Featuring one of those nifty no-drain tuna pouches, the ingredients combine to make tuna salad on crackers (add as much or as little of the mayo and relish as you like), and it even comes with a breath mint, mixing spoon, and napkin. GENIUS. It all adds up to just 250 calories and 10g fat (PointsPlus® value 6*), so grab an apple or something to round out your light meal.

Garden Lites Pizza Soufflé - The first time we tasted this item, we were FLOORED. It's amazingly delicious, and you need to try it. For 200 calories and 4g fat (PointsPlus® value 5*), you've still got some wiggle room to add a side dish and light dessert. Click to locate!

Cedarlane Egg White Omelettes - What? Just because they're omelettes, you think they have to be for breakfast? INSANITY! These are too good to limit to morning hours; plus, we love a good protein boost in the middle of the day. Each one has 230 - 300 calories and 8 - 13g fat (PointsPlus® value 6 - 8*). We LOVE the one with ranchero sauce! Check the store locator, and stock up.

Tabatchnick Soup Singles - Not just frozen soup -- frozen soup that comes in its own bowl. And Tabatchnick is known for its soupy deliciousness. The stats range from 90 to 330 calories and 0.5 to 7g fat (PointsPlus® value 2 - 8*); some of these are practically a meal in and of themselves. The New York Style Chicken Broth with Noodles & Vegetables has the lowest calorie count, and Southwest Bean has the highest. Find 'em here.

Annie Chun's Noodle Express - All you gotta do is heat 'n eat these saucy shelf-stable noodles. A serving is technically half a tray, but the calorie and fat counts are low enough that we feel fine about eating both servings! The whole tray's worth of noodles comes to 320 - 400 calories and 4 - 14g fat (PointsPlus® value 8 - 11*). In stores and online.

And Now, HG Responds to Common Lunch Situations...

"I'm just gonna buy a salad." When it comes to premade salads, always -- ALWAYS -- check the nutritional info. Don't assume that just because it's a salad, it's good for you. We've been duped before. Look out for lots of cheese, too much dried fruit, and candied nuts. And the stats for the dressings that come along with these salads are frequently TERRIFYING, so watch out. Ditch 'em if possible (or at least use VERY sparingly).

"I NEED sandwich tips and variety!" No problem -- click here for your sack-lunch sandwich info.

"What are some safe sides?" There are many options. Check out our emergency snack guides here and here -- nearly all of those snacks would be great as lunchtime sides. If you want cut veggies, click here for ideas beyond celery sticks and baby carrots. And to put together your own 100-calorie packs, click here!

"I require portable dessert." Pudding cups. They rock. The sugar-free options by Jell-O are great. We've also got rice pudding, tapioca pudding, and bread pudding finds in our arsenal, all courtesy of Kozy Shack. Want something that doesn't need to be refrigerated? Portion-controlled packs of chocolatey treats like Sarris Candies 100 Calories Pretzel Slims are perfect. Sweet snack bars like Special K Granola Bars can also do the trick. In a pinch, go with a few hard candies to finish off your meal.
