New & Improved Jennie-O Turkey Bacon - Jennie's turkey bacon got a makeover! The brand has done away with its extra-lean turkey bacon and made improvements to its regular turkey bacon: This stuff now has less fat than before, plus 60 percent less fat AND sodium than standard pork bacon. The flavor has been tweaked as well, and it's definitely tastier. Yessss! Bonus: The bacon now comes in a resealable package. Each strip has 30 calories, 2.5g fat, 130mg sodium, 0g carbs, 0g fiber, 0g sugars, and 2g protein (PointsPlus® value 1*). See ya in the bacon section...

Nonni's Salted Caramel Biscotti - We can't imagine a better accompaniment to a cuppa joe than this crunchy new cookie. Perfectly salted, not too sweet, just the right texture... and each impressively sized biscotti has only 100 calories, 3.5g fat, 210mg sodium, 17g carbs, 0g fiber, 11g sugars, and 2g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). BTW, nonni is an Italian term for grandma -- wonder whose nonni is the genius behind this!?

Oikos Organic 1 1/2% Low Fat Greek Yogurt - That's not a typo... This line of amazingly rich yogurt has halfway between 1 and 2 percent fat content. Good news if you often find yourself in the dairy aisle unable to choose between fat-free and 2 percent! There's a classic Plain version plus fruit-on-the-bottom varieties: Strawberry, Raspberry, and Pineapple! Each 5.3-oz. container has 100 - 140 calories, 2 - 2.5g fat, 55 - 90mg sodium, 7 - 19g carbs, 0 - 1g fiber, 7 - 19g sugars, and 11 - 13g protein (PointsPlus® value 3 - 4*). YUM!!!

Lying Labels Exposed?! Frozen Desserts Get Tested for Calorie Counts...
As part of a recent segment on TODAY, a slew of diet-friendly frozen desserts were sent to a food lab to determine if their calorie counts were accurate. First, the good news: Tests revealed that a Skinny Cow Truffle Bar, a Stonyfield Frozen Yogurt, and a Ben & Jerry's Fro Yo had slightly lower calorie counts than the stats listed on the packages. The other products that were tested came in with more calories than the packages claim, but for most, the actual calorie counts were within 20 percent of the stats on the labels, which isn't too bad and is in fact allowed by the FDA (yep, that's TRUE!). The showstoppers? Two Arctic Zero products, which were found to have 46 to 68 percent MORE calories than the labels state! Like you, we were extremely saddened and disappointed to learn this information, and we received TONS of emails from HG subscribers who were ready to throw their Arctic Zero right out the window. Before you do, here's some food for thought... Although the pints tested didn't have the reported 150 calories each, they did clock in with just 219 to 252 calories per pint. That's still WAY less than virtually every low-calorie/low-fat ice cream packaged product out there. Do we think it's upsetting that companies are potentially reporting inaccurate calorie counts? YES. ABSOLUTELY! But we're also aware that many of these treats are still far better options than their full-fat counterparts. We reached out to the people at Arctic Zero, and they are steadfastly standing by the calorie counts printed on the labels, stating the following: "We have had our products tested repeatedly in the past and our caloric contents have always been within FDA guidelines." The brand also posted its own lab results on Facebook and has committed to having additional tests done at different labs to get to the bottom of things. Nature's Own Oatmeal Toasters - No time for a bowl of hot oaty cereal? Pop one of these in the toaster, and eat it on the go -- the inside is so moist, it doesn't even need any butter or jam! In Cinnamon Raisin and Cranberry Orange, each square has 160 - 170 calories and 1.5 - 2g fat (PointsPlus® value 4 - 5*). Oat-rageous! The Buzz...
Big news from Boston Market: Not only have the head honchos at the restaurant chain committed to reducing sodium levels in their food by 15 to 20 percent before 2015, but they've also announced that they've removed saltshakers from the tables in all their restaurants! Saltshakers will still be available, but customers will have to "leave the table to find a shaker." (Ha, will they be hidden?) Bold move, Boston Market! ***Who says that good-for-you food has to cost an arm and a leg? Not the Environmental Working Group! The EWG has put together a website outlining the most nutritious foods with impressive price tags. The site even breaks it all down by food group. Genius! ***We're not sure if this is a dream come true or a nightmare come to life. A restaurateur in China has built -- are you ready for this? -- an army of noodle-making robots. Not just machines; actual robot chefs that slice fresh noodles. We don't recall seeing these guys in the Terminator movies... Maybe they'll have their own Carbohydrator series. ***Back to more practical topics, results of a new study suggest that high-fructose corn syrup has the same effect as sucrose (ordinary sugar) when it comes to weight control. Subjects on calorie-restricted diets who consumed HFCS shed an equal amount of weight as those who consumed sucrose. Based on this trial, it appears that overall calorie control is the more important factor as far as weight loss is concerned. ***Hungry for more HG? Check out the September issue of Redbook!
