Restaurant News: Out with 2012, In with 2013!
Let's stick a fork in 2012 already! Leading us into the New Year, Chili's has added a handful of new menu items, including two Lighter Choice selections: Mango-Chile Chicken (580 calories, 24g fat) and Mango-Chile Tilapia (620 calories, 30g fat). YUM! To save calories and fat, request double veggies and no rice -- then get the vinaigrette on the side, and use it sparingly. This coming spring, yogurt shop TCBY will reportedly be testing out a new yogurt-bar concept, featuring fresh yogurt -- both regular and Greek -- and a bevy of toppings to choose from. How cool! What else can we expect in 2013? This list details the predictions made by chefs regarding the next wave of restaurant menu trends -- we're most excited to see health/nutrition as a culinary theme and smaller portions for a smaller price. As for the future of fast food, the big trend is going schmancy -- Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, lounge chairs... a fireplace?! Wow! See you all in January...

These picks aren't supermarket staples, but they're TOTALLY worthy of an online purchase...
Sheila G's Brownie Brittle - Imagine the very edges of a pan of brownies, where the brownies get a little crunchy -- that's what this tastes like! In Toffee Crunch, Chocolate Chip, and Traditional Walnut, each 6-piece serving has 120 calories and 4g fat (PointsPlus® value 3*). The sampler pack is looking pretty appealing to us! (P.S. You can also find Brownie Brittle in select stores -- click for the 411.)
Foster's All Natural Pickled Asparagus Spears - These veggie spears may be less decadent than the previous pick, but they're no less wonderful! Perfect for snacking, the pickled asparagus spears come in original, Crushed Red Pepper, Jalapeño, and Cajun varieties. Chomp on 3 spears for a mere 10 calories and no fat (PointsPlus® value 0*). Heads up: These are a definite splurge in the cost department, and the jars are sold by the case -- we suggest splitting an order with a friend or two!
Lucero White Balsamic Vinegar - We've been major cheerleaders for Lucero's tasty vinegars for a while now, but the latest flavors are on a whole new level. The white balsamics come in Pineapple, Strawberry, and Lemon -- just 25 fat-free calories per tablespoon (PointsPlus® value 1*). We cannot stress enough just how amazing these are -- sweet, crisp, and so yummy. Try all three in the sampler pack!
And don't forget these favorites: Vivi's Original Sauce, Vitalicious VitaTops and other Vita goodies (there's a FREE-SHIPPING special happening TODAY), and powdered PB (by FitNutz or PB2)!
Steel your self-control, humans. McDonald's McRib sandwich has once again returned. The popular drive-thru item has 500 calories and 26g fat (PointsPlus® value 13*). Lucky for YOU, we've got a super-simple recipe swap for the saucy thing with 335 calories and 4.5g fat (PointsPlus® value 9*). AND ours is even meatless! ***Need a new reason to exercise? It's a great way to combat that all-too-common holiday-time stress! The energy burst you get from physical activity can reportedly help burn off excess adrenaline and chill you out. So break a sweat to boost your mood! ***Another shortcut to a good mood is apparently as easy as going green. Not environmentally -- chromatically! A recent study shows that the mental-health benefits of exercising outdoors don’t come just from soaking in the sunshine -- the abundance of the color green could be playing a huge role as well! How refreshing... ***Good news from the world of supermarket delis: Sara Lee has reformulated its sliced-to-order meats, and the new premium turkey, chicken, and ham products have no added hormones, MSG, gluten, fillers, artificial flavors, OR artificial colors. Very impressive! ***Finally, if you've ever wondered what people around the world eat for a typical holiday meal, click here. This fun infographic portrays plates of holiday food worldwide, from Australia to Zimbabwe. Peru's pineapple-decorated turkey has HG written all over it! And that's all we've got. HG out!
