ASK HUNGRY GIRL

Dear HG,

I love waffles, and the stats on some of the frozen versions aren't bad. But I never know what to add other than light butter and syrup. Got any ideas to make 'em more meal-like?

Waffling Wendy

Hi Wendy,

You're right -- there are so many waffles in the freezer aisle with impressive stats: Eggo Nutri-Grain Low Fat, Van's Lite, Kashi 7 Grain... Here are some great ways to turn those waffles into a full-on meal!

Break out the breakfast meat. Sausage is great -- stick to meatless or turkey varieties with reasonable stats, like the ones from MorningStar Farms or Jimmy Dean. If you're more of a bacon lover, add a slice of center-cut or turkey bacon. Oscar Mayer, Hormel, and Jennie-O make some of my favorites. You can even find products like Jimmy Dean Turkey Hearty Sausage Crumbles and Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon Bits -- no crumbling or chopping necessary! All of these morning meats are GREAT paired with frozen waffles. Top it all off with sugar-free pancake syrup -- YUM! By the way, beware of lite pancake syrup -- a quarter-cup has about 100 calories, compared to the 30 calories or so in the same amount of the sugar-free stuff.

Feelin' fruity? Stir berries or chopped fruit into some low-sugar fruit preserves, and spoon it over your waffles. Then add a little powdered sugar (only 10 calories per teaspoon) to make it feel really special. This would be great paired with a container of fat-free vanilla Greek yogurt!

Spread the love... Light butter isn't your only option. The Laughing Cow Smooth Sensations Cream Cheese Spread comes in a bunch of 1/3 less fat flavors -- the Cinnamon Cream and Strawberries & Cream are especially good on waffles. Just 45 calories and 4g fat per wedge, plus a couple grams of protein. Love peanut butter? Go for reduced-fat PB -- around 95 calories and 6g fat per tablespoon, plus 4g protein to keep you satisfied. Hungry for more? Pair your waffle with an egg mug!

Breakfast Waffle (there's an EGG on top), Foxy Lox-Topped Waffle (lox rocks, but click here for important recall info), and Hungry Grilled Ham 'n Cheese Waffle 'Wich (WAFFLE 'WICH!). And check out these B-fast Waffle Tacos and S'mores Waffles -- both so good, I could cry.

Happy breakfasting!

Hi Hungry Girl,

I love to snack, but I'm not satisfied by small portions, no matter how delicious the food. Got any suggestions?
