New Meals from Team Newman!
Spotted on Shelves...
Select Picks! Newman's Own Complete Skillet Meals For Two - Not everything in this new lineup is a nutritional home run, but some are super impressive! The best picks are the Beef & Broccoli, Beef Bolognese with Pasta, Chicken Florentine & Farfalle, Grilled Chicken Teriyaki with Lo Mein Noodles, and Garlic Chicken, Vegetables & Farfalle. A 1/2-package serving of each of those has 250 - 390 calories, 6 - 11g fat, 800 - 850mg sodium, 22 - 54g carbs, 3 - 5g fiber, 4 - 20g sugars, and 19 - 27g protein (PointsPlus® value 6 - 10*). In freezer cases nationwide...

Hormel Jalapeño Flavored Real Crumbled Bacon - Precooked crumbled bacon ROCKS. It's low in fat and ready to eat. Well, Hormel has taken its bits to the next level with a kick of jalapeño! A tbsp. has just 25 calories, 1.5g fat, 190mg sodium, and 3g protein (PointsPlus® value 1*). More flavor = happy mouths!

Kashi Chewy Granola Bars with Chia - Snack bar fanatics, check these out... The new chia-packed chewy bars come in two tasty flavors: Berry Lemonade and Chocolate Almond & Sea Salt! Each bar has 130 - 140 calories, 1.5 - 4g fat, 100 - 120mg sodium, 21 - 23g carbs, 4g fiber, 7g sugars, and 6g protein (PointsPlus® value 3 - 4*). Great stats! For now, find the chocolatey bars at Target (coming soon to Walmart and other retailers). The fruity flavor is in stores nationwide!

Subway "Secret" Menu Items… We Do the Math!
The most recent restaurant chain to dish out hidden menu items? Subway! The sub shop has been known to customize meals with any assortment of meats, cheeses, and toppings. And executive chef Chris Martone has divulged the details on some customer-suggested combos. Here are our favorites, along with stats courtesy of the nutritional info on the Subway site!

HG TIP: Since these aren't official menu items, your best bet is to order these by the ingredients, not the names...

Sweet and Sour Chicken Sub - This sassy suggestion includes chicken strips, banana peppers, tomatoes, and red onion, along with sweet onion sauce and red wine vinaigrette. Mmmm! Order it on 6-inch 9-Grain Wheat bread for about 390 calories and 5g fat (PointsPlus® value 9*).

Eggs Florentine Flatbread - Love this! It's egg whites, red onion, banana peppers, spinach, black olives, and fat-free Italian dressing. Get it on a 3" flatbread for around 190 calories and 5g fat (PointsPlus® value 5*).

Double Chicken Chopped Salad - This one only reads like a secret-menu special order (totally something we'd request!)... It's actually a recent addition found on Subway's website! Before dressing, it has 220 calories and 4.5g fat (PointsPlus® value 5*). You can also turn any 6-inch or double-meat sub into a chopped salad... Click for the 411!

Some Secrets Shouldn't Be Kept...

Calorie Counts, Coast to Coast!
Calorie Counts Go Mainstream: Starbucks Menu Boards and Beyond!
HUGE NEWS: Starting this week, Starbucks will post calorie counts on menu boards NATIONWIDE, getting a jump on the federal requirement. The 'Bucks joins McDonald's and Panera Bread in being ahead of the game. Good for you, guys! In further calorie-count news, Google has added USDA nutritional info for about 1,000 foods to its website and newest search app. Now when you search "calories in steak," the first thing you'll see is a pull-down display where you can select the kind of steak and the serving size to get the most accurate calorie count. WOW! Finally, you may soon be able to find nutrition panels on alcoholic beverages. This isn't a new law or requirement, but according to the Treasury Department (which regulates alcohol, apparently), makers of beer, wine, and spirits can now legally include labels with serving sizes, calories, carbs, etc. Good stuff!

The Buzz…
Here's a food trend we can get behind: According to recently published research by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, breakfast cereals have more fiber, less sugar, AND less sodium than they have in the past! The study highlighted changes in products from major manufacturers between 2005 and 2011. The fiber count increased by 32 percent! We'll raise a cereal bowl to that... ***Hungry for more HG recipes? Check out the summer-ific salads we created for our pals and partners over at Wonderful Almond Accents! There's the Fresh 'n Fruity Chopped Salad (250 calories) and the Tex Mex Crunch Salad (315 calories). SO GOOD! Click here for these recipes and more. ***And wrapping things up, here's some fun future food news. Wrigley has officially filed a patent for gum sweetened and flavored with dried fruit powders! Possible sources include blueberries, plums, and cherries. So if you like things all-natural but aren't into sugary gum, a new option could be on the way. Neat! And that's all we've got. HG out!
