Whip It Good!
Spotted on Shelves...
Jif Whips - These spreads aren't labeled as guilt-free in any way, but their light 'n fluffy nature results in calorie counts even lower than reduced-fat peanut butter! A 2-tbsp. serving has 140 - 150 calories, 11 - 12g fat, 60 - 95mg sodium, 6 - 11g carbs, 1 - 2g fiber, 2 - 8g sugars, and 3 - 5g protein (PointsPlus® value 4*). Choose from Creamy Whipped Peanut Butter and Whipped Peanut Butter & Chocolate. Portion some out, and spread it on Fuji apple slices!

LesserEvil Chia Crisps - Yum alert! These gluten-free chips are made with black beans, rice flour, and chia seeds, and they come in REALLY fun flavors: Feta and Black Olive, Crunchy Dill Pickle, Jalapeño White Cheddar, and Southern Barbeque. Ahhh!!! Each 1-oz. serving (about 22 crisps) has 110 calories, 3.5g fat, 200 - 290mg sodium, 19 - 20g carbs, 3g fiber, 1g sugars, and 4g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). Click to find a bag near you, or order a case online.

Special K Multi-Grain Cereal - We love cereal with some fiber and an impressive calorie count... and this one's even free of fat! The crispy flakes have the perfect amount of sweetness. Munch on 'em as a snack, or toss them in your breakfast bowl. Each cup has 110 calories, 0g fat, 200mg sodium, 27g carbs, 3g fiber, 6g sugars, and 2g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). Nicely done, S.K.!

Fantastic Fruit & Veggie News: Save Calories and Cash... Doctor's Orders!
One of the most common complaints in the battle to eat better is that "healthy food costs more." The Center for Science in the Public Interest set out to debunk that claim by comparing fruits and veggies to common packaged snacks and sides. And lo and behold, they found that fresh produce often costs less and has fewer calories! For example, you can save $0.83 and 145 calories by snacking on half a cup of banana instead of a Hershey's bar. For a crunchy side, cucumber slices cost about half as much as potato chips, and the cucumbers have around 97 percent fewer calories! And if you wanna pop something sweet and bite-sized in your mouth, a serving of grapes costs only $0.46, compared to the $0.75 you'd pay for M&Ms... Plus, you save 180 calories. All those savings add up, people, so no more excuses! Click here for the full report. In related news, health-care providers in many states are actually prescribing produce! It's all part of the Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program, which aims to help overweight and obese children as well as pregnant women improve their health. Prescriptions can be redeemed at participating farmers' markets. What a fresh idea!

Chew Two and Call Me in the Morning!

Hot Pretzels, Cool Calorie Counts!
Now Trending: Soft Pretzels (Shockers and Swap Ideas!)
Pretzels and pretzel bread appear to be the hot things hitting menus these days, but most of these items are larger and more carby than we care for. Rather than sit this trend out, we've got smart swaps...

Wendy's Pretzel Bacon Cheeseburger - Instead of chomping into this 680-calorie monstrosity, make our bacon cheeseburger swap on a Flatout Soft Pretzel Foldit! Each flatbread has 100 calories and 1.5g fat (PointsPlus® value 3*). Perfect for all your pretzel-bread sandwich desires...

T.G.I. Friday's Warm Pretzels with Craft Beer-Cheese Dipping Sauce - An order of this pretzel-stick appetizer packs an insane 1,140 calories and 51g fat! For a perfectly portioned swap, heat up a Thomas' Mini Pretz-a-bagel (120 calories, 0.5g fat, PointsPlus® value 3*). Cut it into nuggets, and slather on a Laughing Cow Light cheese wedge! Fancy beer infusions are overrated anyway...

Straight-Up Soft Pretzels - Your average soft pretzel has about 350 calories, but you can cut that stat by more than HALF with the classic freezer-aisle SuperPretzels. The kind that come six to a box each have 160 calories and 1g fat (PointsPlus® value 4*). We like 'em with good ol' fashioned yellow mustard!

The Buzz…
East Coast people, we've got a new product pick for you: Thin 'n Trim All Natural Chicken Sausage! The links each have 70 calories and 2.5g fat (PointsPlus® value 2*), and they come in flavors like Wildfire Buffalo and Chipotle & Peach Salsa. WOW! ***Good news for concertgoers! Live Nation Entertainment has announced some major upgrades to the concessions sold at its amphitheaters nationwide, including vegetarian meals and locally sourced produce. Rock on! Could meals and snacks for the calorie conscious be next? ***If you need a serious reason to eat breakfast, get this... New research links regularly skipping breakfast to a significantly higher risk of heart attacks. The study was done on men, so further research would be needed to determine if we ladies are at risk. We're pouring ourselves a bowl of Fiber One just in case... ***Having trouble with your weight-loss efforts? Try picking up the phone. Not for the calorie burn, silly! A recent study modeled after the Diabetes Prevention Program found that participants who joined group calls with a primary-care worker saw successful weight loss... more so than those on individual calls. Such a cool option, since not everyone has time to regularly hit group meetings. And that's all we've got. HG out!

CHEW ON THIS:
It's National Oyster Day, August 5th. Oysters are low in calories and fat, and they're a good source of zinc, iron, and other nutrients. Just don't load 'em up with oily bread crumbs and creamy toppings!
