Value-Menu Items: The Secret Guilt-Free Finds!
Since value-priced menu offerings are generally smaller and simpler than other restaurant items (which, let's face it, can be too large and too extravagant!), the value menu can be a FANTASTIC place to find smart picks! Arby's Value Menu: You can do REALLY well with this lineup. The Jr Roast Beef Sandwich has just 210 calories and 8g fat. The limited-time-only Jr Deluxe (with fresh veggies) has 270 calories and 13g fat. And the Jr Ham & Cheddar has only 210 calories and 6g fat. Plus, apple slices are an option!

New! Panera Bread Half Portions: We love Panera's downsized You Pick Two options, and now you can get a single half portion all by itself! (Available at most locations.) Warning! Not ALL value menus are safe territory. For example, Taco Bell's Why Pay More! listing. Though most of the items aren't terribly high in calories, there's not much in the way of veggies and lean protein. Luckily, the guilt-free Fresco-style options don't cost that much more anyway!

It's a Gluten-Free Frenzy!
Huge Gluten-Free News! (New Label Criteria & Menu Items!)
FDA Issues Labeling Standards - Until now, gluten-intolerant folks had to just trust that items marked gluten-free were safe for consumption. There was no clear definition or regulation on the matter. Well, the new Food and Drug Administration rule lays out specific characteristics a food must have in order to bear a gluten-free label. Manufacturers have a year to get their labels into compliance. Good looking out, FDA!

The Cheesecake Factory Introduces Gluten-Free Menu - After being tested at select locations, a gluten-free menu with more than 80 dishes is rolling out at the chain's locations nationwide! Many of the items are reworked versions of popular existing dishes, using swaps like gluten-free buns and pasta. And there's a whole section of SkinnyLicious (a.k.a. under 590 calories) options, including the too-good-for-words Mexican Chicken Lettuce Wrap Tacos. That ROCKS.

Hidden Gluten-Free Menus - While not every restaurant has an official gluten-free menu, many list suitable selections on their websites for those with gluten sensitivities! Click for offerings from Applebee's, Chili's, Burger King, and Olive Garden.

Reminder… Gluten-free isn't necessarily guilt-free, so always check the full nutritional stats, if available. When in doubt, consult this HG survival guide on dining out!

The Buzz...
If you eat your biggest meal of the day in the morning, you may be onto something. A recent weight-loss study compared two groups: one in which participants ate larger breakfasts, and one in which subjects had bigger dinners. Participants in both groups consumed 1,400 calories per day. The subjects who had bigger breakfasts shed significantly more pounds and inches than those who ate more at dinner. WOW! One Big Banana-Berry French Toast, coming right up... ***Check your fridges and freezers, because the National Beef Packing Co. has recalled about 50,000 pounds of ground beef due to potential E. coli contamination. The beef in question was distributed to stores nationwide. Click for details, and chew safely. ***In labeling news, bottles of Naked Juice will no longer be able to boast the "all-natural" claim due to a lawsuit citing ingredients that don't fit the bill. The culprits? An "added boost of vitamins" that are actually synthetic. We'd rather eat fresh fruit than drink juice anyway! ***Are SnapDragon and RubyFrost a couple of new Marvel superheroes? Nope! They're two new kinds of apples, developed by Cornell University with the New York Apple Growers. The spicy-sweet SnapDragon is related to the Honeycrisp, and the refreshing RubyFrost is likened to Empire and Granny Smith apples. They won't be widely distributed until 2015, but we couldn't wait to share the news! And that's all we've got. HG out!
