Apple Pie a la Java!
Spotted on Shelves...
Dunkin' Donuts Apple Pie Ground Coffee - At this point in October, do you feel overcome by pumpkin-pie-flavored beverages? Dunkin' Donuts is looking to restore some balance, launching its new apple-pie-flavored ground coffee. WOW! We cannot wait to try some! Rounding out the seasonal offerings are Mocha Mint and, of course, the ubiquitous Pumpkin Spice. All virtually calorie-free. (Just be smart about the add-ins!) Click to find at a grocery store near you.

Lay's Air Pops - Sure, they're a little late to the popped-chip party, but the soiree is still in full force! In Original Potato, Barbecue Flavored, and Sour Cream & Onion Flavored, a 1-oz. serving of Lay's new non-fried snacks (about 19 crisps) has 120 calories, 4g fat, 190mg sodium, 19g carbs, <1g fiber, 0 - 2g sugars, and 1 - 2g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). They're currently available in northeastern, Atlantic, midwestern, and heartland states. Find them nationwide next year!

Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Iced Coffee - What's this? Ready-to-sip iced coffee from the makers of our favorite milk swap? YES! Sure, the temps are dropping, but we drink iced coffee year-round. Available in Original, Vanilla, Mocha, and Caramel Macchiato, each cup has 100 calories, 2g fat, 115 - 120mg sodium, 19g carbs, 1g fiber, 17g sugars, and 1g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). Look for it with the refrigerated soymilks... YUM!

Gluten-Free Foods: Inherently Healthy and Good for Weight Loss?
Gluten intolerance and sensitivity are very real things. Some people find they feel better physically when they cut gluten out of their diet. However, a recent study by Mintel reveals some interesting ideas held by those who consume gluten-free foods...

65 percent of gluten-free-food consumers eat these foods because they think they are healthier than foods that contain gluten.

27 percent do so because they feel these foods aid their weight-loss efforts.

75 percent of consumers without celiac disease or gluten sensitivity choose gluten-free foods because they believe they are healthier.

Why are these statistics so fascinating? As one of Mintel's food analysts explains, "It's really interesting to see that consumers think gluten-free foods are healthier and can help them lose weight because there's been no research affirming these beliefs." Now, we're certainly not gluten-free haters -- click here, here, and here for proof -- but we think it's 100 percent worth mentioning that just because a food is free of gluten does NOT mean it's a smart food choice, for health or for weight loss. A stick of butter and a sack of sugar are both gluten-free, and there are certainly fattening products with questionable ingredients that don't contain any gluten. The bottom line? You have to read nutritional panels and ingredient lists to get the hard facts. Don't be had by health halos... Let this be a lesson to all of us!

Why Do YOU Choose Gluten-Free Foods?

Let's Get Nuts!
The Buzz…
Just when we thought we couldn't love almonds any more than we already do, information like this comes along. A new study found that subjects who regularly snacked on almonds experienced reduced hunger levels and no weight gain. Although they consumed around 250 calories' worth of the nuts each day, they didn't increase their overall daily calorie intake. Which reminds us... Time for an almond break! ***Remember the Red's 5-oz. frozen burritos we mentioned a little while ago? Well, those delicious burritos are currently available in special-edition pink packaging, with 10 percent of the sales going to support breast cancer research. Available for a limited time only at Target, Stop & Shop, and Giant stores, so stock up! ***Wanna get all sci-fi on your weight management? A new gadget, TellSpec, apparently can beam your food -- not a bar code, the food itself -- with a laser, and instantly report to you its calorie content, ingredients, and more. WHAT?! Can this be for real? It's currently in development and drumming up funding... We'll be the first in line to test it and report back! ***Bummer alert. Though restaurants love to plug nutritional improvements (for example, all the "Under Fill-in-the-Blank Calories" menus), they're still making major calorie catastrophes as well. This one-step-forward, one-step-back approach means that even with all the recent changes, calorie and sodium levels in chain restaurant entrées have remained pretty much the same. Sigh. Order smart, people! ***Speaking of ordering smart, check out this video comparing calorie counts of seemingly healthy fast-food salads with those of burgers and fried chicken. Sure, you could get the stats from the websites, but the visual comparisons really hammer the point home. And that's all we've got. HG out!
