Amy's Light & Lean Macaroni & Cheese
Amy Does It Again!
Spotted on Shelves... (Freezer-Aisle Edition!)
Amy's Light & Lean Macaroni & Cheese - Since there can never be too many guilt-free mac 'n cheese options, and since pretty much everything out of Amy's kitchen tastes UH-MAZING, we welcome this cheddar-ific newbie with open mouths! Each container has 290 calories, 5g fat, 560mg sodium, 43g carbs, 2g fiber, 4g sugars, and 16g protein (PointsPlus® value 7*). Find it at supermarkets and natural-foods stores STAT.

Lean Cuisine Wrap Additions - Check it out: This line features meat-veggie-sauce combos that are meant to be wrapped in your favorite (high-fiber!) tortillas. Choose from Creamy Balsamic Chicken, Chicken Teriyaki, Buffalo-Style Chicken, and Turkey Ranch. Pre-tortilla, each has 160 - 170 calories, 2 - 6g fat, 350 - 430mg sodium, 13 - 26g carbs, 3 - 4g fiber, 5 - 13g sugars, and 11 - 16g protein (PointsPlus® value 4*). Even though the brand already has a Salad Additions line, we'd totally put these over our greens too! Look for them at Walmart, Target, Kroger, and Publix locations. (They'll be in more places next month.)

Skinny Cow Chocolate Mint Ganache and Chocolate Mousse Ganache Ice Cream Cones - Just because it's cold out doesn't mean you shouldn't eat ice cream. (What kind of world would THAT be?) Especially considering the svelte bovine is now serving up ice cream cones in Chocolate Mint Ganache and Chocolate Mousse Ganache flavors! Each one has 160 calories, 4.5g fat, 65 - 85mg sodium, 27 - 28g carbs, 3g fiber, 16g sugars, and 4g protein (PointsPlus® value 4*). Go, Cow...

Trend Alert! Hot Flavors for 2014
Looks like the latest Trend to Taste report from Sensient Flavors has some predictions when it comes to food crazes for the New Year. Here are a few we're excited about!

Balsamic Fig: Apparently our pals at Lucero are ahead of the trend, because they've been making Fig Balsamic Vinegar for a while now. (Order some online; it ROCKS.) For a DIY treat, drizzle some fresh figgies (only about 40 calories each, plus 1.5g fiber) with a little balsamic vinegar. Schmancy!

Gochujang: Is this "the next Sriracha" as some are saying? The savory condiment is made from red chili, rice, soybeans, and salt. Sounds tasty! Nab some online or at Asian specialty stores, and use it to top off egg mugs and sandwiches made with 100-calorie flat buns.

Guasacaca: This Venezuelan sauce/dip is mostly avocado with parsley, cilantro, garlic, oil, vinegar, and more. YUM! We could TOTALLY do a fat-slashed, pea-enhanced version of this, much like our rockin' guac swap. But we'll skip the oil or use it sparingly...

Tayberry: This is a cross between a blackberry and raspberry, two of the most fiber-dense and delicious fruits around... SCORE! Like the other berries, tayberries are full of vitamins and antioxidants. If you spot them in stores, use 'em in an HG recipe that calls for raspberries or blackberries. We'll be on the lookout for these, for sure!

Flavor Trends for 2014
The Beginning of the Trend...

Ready, Set, SHOP!
The Buzz…
Did you miss our Official 2014 Supermarket List this past Friday? GET IT HERE!!! We can't believe we left off our beloved potatoes (click for HG recipes!), so we've updated the list (along with the super-awesome printable PDF) to include 'em. Check it out! ***Convenience-store foods don't always have the best nutritional reputation, but one chain is working pretty hard to change that! Introducing 7-Eleven's new Egg White Breakfast Sandwich -- 180 calories and 5 grams of fat (and just $1.99). It's sold refrigerated, but you can have it toasted on request (or just pop it in the microwave). Pair it with a Fresh To Go fruit cup and some coffee, and you've got a totally respectable breakfast! ***Popcorn fans, we've got a great find for you. The all-natural, pre-popped stuff from Gaslamp Popcorn Co. is out of this world, with 130 - 140 calories and 4.5 - 7g fat per 1-oz. serving. The Kettle Corn is perfectly salted, the Cinnamon Caramel is ridiculously good, and the White Cheddar might make your head explode (in a good way). It's only at WinCo stores (which are mainly on the West Coast), but people anywhere can get it by the case online. Put in an order with some buddies! ***Guess what? Some of the country's largest food companies have slashed the calories in their products by a collective 6 TRILLION CALORIES, four times more than they pledged to cut by next year. WOWOWOWOW. Click for the scoop! ***Speaking of companies slimming down foods… Frito-Lay has patented an innovative new process to make lower-fat potato chips. Reportedly, it uses a combination of low-pressure frying and deoiling in a vacuum centrifuge. Whoa, science! ***And if you need some help in the portion-control department, we found a very handy infographic. Handy as in "look at your hand." Many of us know that 3 oz. of meat is about the size of our palm, but guess which digit helps estimate a portion of peanut butter? Click 'n learn! And that's all we've got. HG out!

Brought to you by Alexia Foods!

As lovers of all things French fry and potato related, we are REALLY excited about Alexia's new Smart Classics line -- 98% fat-free fries and potatoes with just 100 calories per serving! They're all-natural (which we love), roasted (never fried), and COMPLETELY delicious. Try all three varieties: Straight-Cut Fries, Crinkle-Cut Fries (the HG favorite!), and Tri-Cut Potatoes. Find 'em in the freezer aisle, preheat your oven, and break out the ketchup!
