GIRLS BITE OUT

Edible Idol: PB&J

It's one of the most classic food combos, loved by kids and grown-ups alike. There was even an irritating Internet video celebrating the pairing. Apologies for putting that song in your head, but today's Edible Idol is PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY!

The Peanut Butter

Go-To Pick: Reduced-Fat Peanut Butter
Okay, this one's kind of a no-brainer, but it's definitely our number-one choice. A 2-tbsp. serving has about 195 calories and 12g fat (PointsPlus® value 5*). Top tip: Always measure it out! Prefer regular all-natural peanut butter? Buy the kind with the oil on top; then pour off the oil instead of stirring it in, saving you oodles of calories and fat grams. Or go for portion-controlled packs, like the kind by Justin's. In the market for something really low in fat? Check out Better'n Peanut Butter/Peanut Wonder -- just 100 calories and 2g fat per 2-tbsp. serving (PointsPlus® value 2*).

Fun Find Worth Seeking Out: Powdered Peanut Butter
This magical stuff is made from defatted peanuts. A little water turns it into a dippable, spreadable, guilt-free concoction. If you like, add a dash of salt and/or sweetener to boost the flavor. Two tablespoons of powdered PB has about 50 calories and 1.5g fat (PointsPlus® value 1*). Both Bell Plantation and FitNutz make the yummy stuff. Click here for fun ways to use it!

Sweet Ingredients: Peanut Butter Baking Chips and Low-Calorie Peanut Butter Cereal
OK, you don't want to go eating PB baking chips by the fistful -- well, you might WANT to, but you shouldn't -- however a small amount of the chips can add sweet PB flavor where you need it. A 1-tbsp. serving has 80 calories and 4g fat (PointsPlus® value 2*). To get the most mileage out of 'em, chop or lightly crush the chips, like we did in this snack mix -- add some freeze-dried strawberries for a whole lotta PB&J fun! PB cereal is another amazing ingredient. Look for one with 120 calories or less per 3/4 cup. Peanut Butter Multi Grain Cheerios, Barbara's Peanut Butter Puffins, Reese's Puffs... All GREAT!

The Jelly

Go-To Picks: Low-Sugar Jellies, Jams, and Preserves
These sugar-slashed fruit spreads strike just the right balance between low calorie counts and great flavor. Each tablespoon has around 25 calories (PointsPlus® value 1*). When it comes to variety (from strawberry to red raspberry), Smucker's is the name of the game -- half the sugar of regular preserves, with no artificial sweeteners added. And Welch's makes an excellent Reduced Sugar Concord Grape Jelly. There's room in our fridge for both brands!

Tasty Alternative: Polaner Sugar Free with Fiber
If you like your jellies super low in calories PLUS a little something extra, this is the line for you. Why it still says "New!" all over their website is beyond us, since we've been gabbing about the fiber-boosted spreads since 2009. We won't hold it against 'em, since each tablespoon has only 10 calories, plus 3g fiber (PointsPlus® value 0*).

The Fruit, the Whole Fruit, and Nothing but the Fruit: Strawberries
While the grape jelly + PB combo is AMAZING, actual grapes with peanut butter? Um, no, thank you. Fresh strawberries, on the other hand, pair perfectly with PB (as do the freeze-dried variety). Exhibit A: These PB-rific Stuffed Strawberries. CASE CLOSED.
