GIRLS BITE OUT
Read on for beauty-boosting finds that might already be in your fridge!
Yogurt for Your Skin
The active component here is the lactic acid in the yogurt. It acts as a gentle exfoliator and has been found to have anti-aging properties -- it's used in a lot of age-fighting beauty products! For an easy face mask, smear it on freshly washed skin, and let it sit for about 10 minutes before rinsing it off. Got dry skin? Add some honey to the mix. (YUM!) Stick to plain Greek yogurt, since it's thicker and less runny than regular yogurt.
Snack suggestion: Mix up leftover yogurt with a bit of ranch seasoning mix for an incredibly tasty dip, or whip up HG's special guacamole! Don't forget the baby carrots...
Avocado for Your Skin
The egg-shaped fruit -- yup, it's a fruit -- has major benefits, whether you put the avocado on your face or just in your face! Between the monounsaturated fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin E, and antioxidants, avocados have it going on. And avocado oil shows up in beauty products for its skin-nourishing ways. Add avocado to your food (a little goes a long way, so measure it out), and apply it to your face too!
Snack suggestions: For an easy and amazing three-ingredient treat, mash up that avo, spread it on some crispbread crackers, and top with sun-dried tomatoes. Or have some more of that HG guac!
Cucumber for Your Eyes
The cucumbers-on-your-eyes tip has been around forever, and with good reason! Word is the antioxidants in cucumbers can reduce irritation, and chilled cukes can help de-puff your peepers. Eating them can also benefit your complexion. The high water content helps flush out toxins and hydrate skin. Super!
Snack suggestions: Slice up some cucumbers and toss with seasoned rice vinegar for a two-ingredient sunomono salad. It doesn't get much easier than that!
Strawberries for Your Teeth
Those tooth-whitening products can taste a little icky. What tastes the opposite of icky? STRAWBERRIES. Their astringent malic acid, along with their vitamin C, can help clear away stains and plaque. Chow down for a beauteous smile! (You might want to floss after chewing to get rid of stray seeds, though.)
Snack suggestion: Here's a sweet treat, just for you... Juicy berries stuffed with a creamy PB filling!
Banana for Your Hair
Did you know that potassium is essential for hair health? Getting too little can actually cause hair loss. EEKS! So snack on bananas, and use a mashed-banana mask on your hair to give it a boost. The moisturizing properties have been known to fight frizz. Neato!
Snack suggestion: Set some of these banana bites up in the freezer ahead of time, and you'll have something to snack on while you let the mask soak into your strands.
Caffeine for Your Skin
There are conflicting reports out there -- some saying that drinking coffee is good for your skin, others saying that it's bad. But caffeine's properties when applied topically are a bit less controversial; plenty of eye creams use it to reduce puffiness. Brew some green tea, let the tea bags cool, and lay them on your eyes. Or try using ground coffee as part of a DIY body scrub!
Sip Suggestion: It might be time for a Green Tea Crème Swappuccino!
Mango for Your Skin
You don't have to twist our arms to get us to eat mango. And word is that due to its beta-carotene, it's great for clearing up pimples, whether you eat the fruit or put it on your skin. Plus, those carotenoids can help give your skin a bit more glow and color. Check out a few mask options, and then have a snack!
Meal Suggestion: When lunch or dinner rolls around, reach for the rest of that mango, and make these delicious soft tacos.
Salmon for Your Hair and Skin
OK, we're not going to suggest you wrap your head in lox. You don't need to -- just eating salmon gets the nutrients where they need to go. The protein, the vitamin B-12, the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids... Salmon is basically a recipe for healthy skin and hair. The selenium even helps to protect your skin from the sun!
Snack suggestions: Here are a couple of quickie recipes -- Smokey Salmon Lettuce Wraps and Scoopy Salmon Salad. (Pssst! Both ROCK.)
