GIRLS BITE OUT
Tomorrow -- April 26th, 2014 -- is Hungry Girl's 10TH BIRTHDAY! Can you believe it? In celebration of this momentous milestone, we've pulled together the quintessential top 10 HG recipes. These dishes and drinks are what HG has been all about for the last decade -- whether you've made 'em a million times or are new to HG, get cooking ASAP!
Lord of the Onion Rings
Entire recipe: 155 calories, 1g fat, 515mg sodium, 41g carbs, 16g fiber, 7g sugars, 9g protein -- PointsPlus® value 4*
The grande dame of all HG recipes. When Lisa (HG herself) first put Fiber One Original bran cereal into a blender, that was basically the birth of Hungry Girl faux-frys. To this day, there are more than half a dozen variations on this beloved onion ring recipe. Click for three, and find them all in HUNGRY GIRL TO THE MAX! We love you, faux-fried onion rings.
Bake-tastic Butternut Squash Fries
Entire recipe: 204 calories, <1g fat, 258mg sodium, 53g carbs, 9g fiber, 10g sugars, 4g protein -- PointsPlus® value 0*
Our love for butternut squash is no secret; we've been devouring it in place of carbier sweet potatoes for ages. And the way we enjoy it most frequently is as baked-not-fried French fries. Since this recipe's debut, we've made fries out of several veggies and dressed 'em up in wacky ways. But we always come back to the classic...
Fettuccine Hungry Girlfredo
Entire recipe: 99 calories, 4g fat, 376mg sodium, 9.5g carbs, 4g fiber, 1g sugars, 5.5g protein -- PointsPlus® value 2*
If you've never experienced tofu shirataki noodles, the time to do so is now. The texture takes a little getting used to, but as long as you prepare them right, they're an incredible low-calorie pasta swap! They're especially excellent with creamy sauces, which is why this fettuccine Alfredo makeover is where it's at. And you can bet we've got a multitude of spin-off recipes...
Yum Yum Brownie Muffins
1/12th of recipe: 181 calories, 3.5g fat, 357mg sodium, 37g carbs, 2g fiber, 20g sugars, 2g protein -- PointsPlus® value 5*
We're still proud of this two-ingredient recipe. To this day, it's the base for most of our chocolatey cakes and muffins. Just add canned pure pumpkin to devil's food cake mix. THAT'S IT. It's like a miracle. And we're of the opinion that more miracles should involve fiber-boosted chocolate baked goods.
H-O-T Hot Boneless Wings
1/2 of recipe (5 wings): 175 calories, 1.5g fat, 1,153mg sodium, 14g carbs, 4g fiber, <1g sugars, 27g protein -- PointsPlus® value 4*
This is an all-time favorite at the HG HQ. The spicy crunch, the juicy chicken... What's not to love? (BTW, the actual sodium count will likely be much lower, since there's typically hot sauce left over after coating the nuggets.) Those new to HG may have missed out on these babies, which is just wrong. Put them on your To-Chew list! P.S. Click to watch Lisa whip 'em up...
The Egg Mug Classic
Entire recipe: 125 calories, 1.5g fat, 547mg sodium, 3.5g carbs, 0g fiber, 2.5g sugars, 20g protein -- PointsPlus® value 3*
We recently ran down our top egg-mug recipes, and this is the simple combo that started it all. A carton of egg substitute and a wheel of The Laughing Cow Light Creamy Swiss is all you need to enjoy a classically cheesy egg scramble made in the microwave. Ketchup optional, but encouraged...
Cookie-rific Ice Cream Freeze
Entire recipe: 166 calories, 3g fat, 177mg sodium, 28.5g carbs, 1g fiber, 14.5g sugars, 6g protein -- PointsPlus® value 4*
Creamy frozen drinks are the kinds of things we love (because they taste great) but fear (because they typically have a bazillion calories). Here's an oh-so-classic example of one of our blended-beverage makeovers. Who doesn't like cookies 'n crème? Yum, yum, yum...
Growing Oatmeal Bowl
Entire recipe: 246 calories, 5.5g fat, 337mg sodium, 41.5g carbs, 6.75g fiber, 8.5g sugars, 7.5g protein -- PointsPlus® value 6*
Scoot over, egg mug: Here's another HG breakfast must-make! Several years ago, we discovered the trick of doubling both the liquid and the cook time when making oatmeal -- the result being a super-sized serving of delicious hot cereal! There are countless variations, but you can't go wrong with this classic recipe from the Hungry Girl TV show. Give it a try the next time you make a bowl of oats!
Birthday Whoopie Pie
Entire recipe: 165 calories, 4g fat, 148mg sodium, 37g carbs, 9g fiber, 18g sugars, 4g protein -- PointsPlus® value 5*
Finally, since it IS almost Hungry Girl's 10th birthday, we're closing out this list with a birthday-rific twist on an old favorite. The classic Freezy-Cool Whoopie Pie is made with just a chocolate VitaTop and some Cool Whip Free, but this sprinkle 'n chocolate chip spin is a super-fun way to help celebrate HG's b-day! (Pssst... You could even use light vanilla ice cream or Truwhip The Natural Light instead of the Cool Whip.)
