NEWS

Spotted on Shelves...
Smartfood Delight - Smartfood has been famous for its White Cheddar popcorn since the '80s, and now the crunchy snack is even smarter. The new Delight line includes Sea Salt and (of course) White Cheddar varieties, and a 1-oz. serving (a generous 3 1/2 - 3 3/4 cups!) has 130 - 140 calories, 5 - 7g fat, 115 - 220mg sodium, 17 - 18g carbs, 3 - 4g fiber, 0 - <1g sugars, and 3g protein (PointsPlus® value 3 - 4*). Great for parties or everyday snacking. We may be sneaking this into movie theaters...

Dei Fratelli Truly Tomatoes - From sauces to juice drinks, Dei Fratelli knows what it's doing when it comes to tomato products. And this line of recipe-ready tomatoes in light puree is no exception. Choose from Rustic Cut, Petite Cut, and Finely Chopped (which includes onion, carrot, and celery). Each 1/2-cup serving has 30 - 60 calories, 0 - 2g fat, 260 - 340mg sodium, 6 - 11g carbs, <1 - 2g fiber, 5 - 6g sugars, and 1 - 2g protein (PointsPlus® value 1 - 2*). Bet these would be great for slow-cooker creations...

Red's 5-oz. Bean & Cheese and Chipotle Beef & Bean Burritos - Hooray for snack-sized, heat-and-eat burritos! We've mentioned the 5-oz. items from Red's before, and now new bean-packed picks are on the market -- one cheesy and one beefy. Each of the newbies has 270 - 290 calories, 8g fat, 200 - 350mg sodium, 40 - 43g carbs, 3 - 4g fiber, 1 - 2g sugars, and 11 - 12g protein (PointsPlus® value 7 - 8*). Currently in select grocery stores, with more markets and Target locations coming this summer. Yum!

Chipotle Customers Underestimate Calories, but HG Is Coming to the Rescue!
Chipotle Mexican Grill is super popular; people are pretty much obsessed with it. And while we love the easy customization and the flavorful proteins, it's too easy to get into trouble on the calorie front... and most people don't even realize it. (Those calorie ranges on the menu boards can be confusing!) Researchers at Duke University set out to determine the difference between the estimated and actual calorie counts in customers' Chipotle orders. They found that people frequently underestimated the totals, reportedly by an average of about 21 percent. So you may think you're eating a 500-calorie burrito, but it likely has closer to 650 calories. (Click to download the full study.) The good news? For one thing, Chipotle has a nutrition calculator on its site; you've just got to use it! But even better? We polled the HG subscribers in order to decide what our next survival guide should be, and the masses have spoken... It's Chipotle! We'll take out all the guesswork and serve up helpful hints and guidelines, so look for it in the first week of June. Woohoo!

Tofu Shirataki: Now with HALF the Calories?!
You may have noticed that our favorite pasta swap on the planet -- House Foods Tofu Shirataki -- now has just 10 calories per serving, as opposed to 20. How can this be? Don't worry... The stats and packaging may have changed, but the noodles themselves haven't changed one bit. (Phew!) Here's the scoop: The folks at House Foods recently had the product analyzed at a lab to confirm the exact nutritionals. What they discovered is that the fiber in the noodles is insoluble, meaning it doesn't contribute to the total calories. So an entire two-serving bag of our beloved Tofu Shirataki has just 20 calories in total! This calls for a bowl of Fettuccine Hungry Girlfredo... which we now know has only 79 calories!

The Buzz...
Kickstarter is full of all kinds of promising projects, but this gadget is next level. SCiO is a handheld device that scans the molecules of just about anything and gives you detailed info on that specific item's chemical makeup... Including its calorie count! It can also check the ripeness of fruit, which is awesome. Sounds too good to be true, but we want one NOW. ***You know how you're always hearing some new study proclaiming the benefits of eating chocolate? Well, a research team has pinpointed a specific flavonol in chocolate that is responsible for aiding weight loss and treating diabetes. We could really go for some oligomeric procyanidins right now, couldn't you? ***It's officially allergy season, so check out these natural remedies from HG partner About.com Health! Hmmm, one is quercetin... That's the antioxidant in FRS! ***The final stop on The Hungry Girl Diet book tour is this Thursday night (5/8) in Rochester, NY, thanks to our friends at Flatout! Come on out to the Wegmans in Pittsford Plaza at 6 p.m. to get your book signed (no purchase needed -- you can bring one from home), score free snacks, ask Lisa all your questions, and maybe win some great prizes. And it's FREE! Click for more info and to RSVP on Facebook (not required, but it does help us plan)... And that's all we've got. HG out!
