ASK HUNGRY GIRL

Hi HG,

I have a hard time finding some of the products that you write about: broccoli cole slaw, canned pumpkin, and Tofu Shirataki, to name a few. Can you tell me where to look for them?

Searchin' in San Antonio

Hi Searchin',

Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Supermarkets don't always stock products in the places you'd expect them to be. Here's the 411 on where to find some elusive HG staples...

Broccoli cole slaw - This shredded veggie mix is usually found in bags near the precut veggies and bagged salad mixes in the produce section. Recently, we've spotted the stuff in plastic tubs in addition to the bags, so be on the lookout for those!

House Foods Tofu Shirataki, wonton wrappers, and egg roll wrappers - Most of the time, these refrigerated noodles and wrappers are in or near the produce section, although sometimes you'll spot them near the dairy area. Look for the tofu, and these products should be nearby.

Vitalicious VitaTops - These high-fiber treats are found in the freezer case, typically near the breakfasts or with the dessert ingredients and other frozen sweets: whipped topping, fillo shells, pies, etc. Occasionally, you'll spot them near the other frozen natural food products. Check Vita's store locator to see where they're sold. Some flavors can only be ordered online -- keep an eye out for specials in your HG emails!

Meatless burgers and soy crumbles - There's often a vegetarian section in the freezer aisle with meat-free dinners, meal starters, and more -- that's where meatless patties (Boca makes the HG fave) and the ground-beef-style crumbles (click for more on those) are usually located. You'll almost always find these items grouped by brand -- look for the Boca or MorningStar Farms products.

Canned pure pumpkin - Don't head for the canned fruits 'n veggies. Cans of the orange stuff are generally stocked on a low shelf in the baking aisle, near the canned pie filling. Just don't confuse canned pure pumpkin with pumpkin pie filling, which has three times as many calories and grams of sugar! Get more need-to-know pumpkin info here. My favorite use for the stuff? In Yum Yum Brownie Muffins!

Sliced almonds - Here's another find that's often in the baking aisle. If you're looking for flavored variations like the kinds by Wonderful, you might spot 'em in the produce section. And sometimes they're with the shelf-stable salad dressings. Those nuts can be sneaky!

High-fiber flour tortillas and corn tortillas - Look for these at the end of the bread aisle, in the bakery section, or in the ethnic-foods aisle with the Mexican-food ingredients. P.S. My favorite flour tortillas are the kinds by La Tortilla Factory.

If you're still having a hard time finding something, just ask customer service. They'll know if their store carries the product (and if it doesn't, you can request it!) and where to find it in that specific location. Happy hunting!
