ASK HUNGRY GIRL

Hi Hungry Girl,

I'm a new subscriber, and I'm ready to start eating healthier... but I haven't exactly spent much time in the kitchen! What tools do I need to begin making your recipes?

Kitchen-Challenged Katie

Hi Katie,

Welcome to the world of Hungry Girl! It's surprisingly easy to make better-for-you foods at home, and you don't need a whole arsenal of fancy kitchen tools to do it. Here are my go-to basics...

Measuring must-haves. Possibly the most important things you can have in your kitchen are a food scale, measuring spoons, and measuring cups. It's so important to weigh and measure ingredients... not only so that your recipes turn out right, but also to make sure you don't consume excess calories. You can find inexpensive digital food scales at places like Target.

Microwave 101. Stock your kitchen with microwave-safe mugs, bowls, and plates. Microwave-only recipes are huge timesavers, and we've got plenty of them... especially egg mugs, which are egg scrambles made in the microwave! Click here for a few more microwaveable recipes.

Stovetop essentials. A basic skillet and a nonstick pot are all you need. (Okay, a spatula too!) With these items, you can pretty much accomplish any recipe that's cooked on a stove. That skillet will come in handy for easy HG stir-frys, and the pot's perfect for growing oatmeal.

Oven lovin'. A baking sheet and a 12-cup muffin pan are two of my top tools. Use the sheet for baked fries and foil packs. And a muffin pan is essential for portion-controlled creations, both sweet and savory. Try these Ooey-Gooey Chocolate Caramel Muffins and these Mashie-Topped Meatloaf Cupcakes!

Countertop tools. For blended beverages like smoothies and freezy coffee drinks, you'll want to have a good blender. A slow cooker is a must if the set-it-and-forget-it idea appeals to you! (Check out our top slow-cooker recipes, and click here for a super-adorable slow cooker!) Other helpful items? A strainer, a meat mallet (great for stuffed-chicken recipes), mixing bowls, a cutting board (plus a sharp knife), and a pair of kitchen shears.

There you have it... Hit the store; then hit the kitchen!
