ASK HUNGRY GIRL

Dear Hungry Girl,

I need satisfying snacks that I can grab on my way out the door and keep in my purse throughout the day. Problem is, I'm not a fan of sweet stuff like all the snack bars out there. Any ideas?

Sick-of-Sweets Susan

Hi Susan,

I totally understand where you're coming from... Most of the time, I prefer savory foods to sweet ones. And while sweet on-the-go snacks are super popular, that doesn't mean there aren't great savory snacks too. Single-serve packs of nuts are classic, but I've got many other picks as well. Check 'em out...

Savory Snack Bars: This is a recent trend in the world of snack bars. Strong & Kind bars, for example, come in flavors like Honey Smoked BBQ, Roasted Jalapeño, and Hickory Smoked. The 230-calorie bars are a little high in fat (each with 16g fat), but they've got 3g fiber and 10g protein apiece (PointsPlus® value 6*). I've also recently discovered Epic Bars, which are made from bison, turkey, beef, or lamb. I know they sound crazy, but they're like the jerky of the snack bars. The Turkey Almond + Cranberry one is really good -- it tastes like Thanksgiving! Each Epic Bar has 140 - 200 calories and 6 - 12g fat, plus 1 - 2g fiber and 10 - 14g protein (PointsPlus® value 4 - 5*). If these super-savory bars are a little too extreme for you, just look for nut- or seed-based bars that aren't heavy on the sweet stuff, like Kashi Pumpkin Spice Flax Crunchy Granola Bars -- a 2-bar serving has 170 calories, 6g fat, 4g fiber, and 5g protein (PointsPlus® value 5*).

Jerky: I've talked a lot about jerky, but I think some people have yet to embrace it. Beef isn't your only option these days. There are jerky products made from chicken, turkey... even soy. Jack Link's brand is a supermarket staple, and there are many fantastic picks in the lineup. Check out the Original Turkey Minis Snack Bites; those are perfect on the go. Each pack has 60 calories, 1g fat, and 8g protein (PointsPlus® value 2*). A really good meatless line is Primal Strips -- that stuff is soft, chewy, and really flavorful. Each strip has 74 - 108 calories, 1 - 4g fat, 0 - 6g fiber, and 6 - 11g protein (PointsPlus® value 2*). And of course I can't leave out my favorite jerky brand on the planet... Simply Snackin! In varieties like Teriyaki Dried Chicken Breast with Mangoes & Papayas and Dried Beef Sirloin with Apples & Cherries, these dried meat snacks are next level. Each 1-oz. strip has 60 calories, 0 - 0.5g fat, and 8 - 11g protein (PointsPlus® value 1*).

Seaweed Snacks: These crispy treats are becoming more and more popular. I'm crazy about GimMe All Natural Roasted Seaweed Crumbles, which come in flavors like Cheddar Cheese. Each bag has 100 calories, 7 - 9g fat, and 2 - 4g protein (PointsPlus® value 3*). The GimMe company makes the more classic seaweed sheets too -- also great! A single-size pouch has 25 calories, 2g fat, and 1g protein (PointsPlus® value 1*). Annie Chun's has seaweed sheets as well -- the Cracked Pepper & Herbs flavor is super tasty.

Tuna Pouches: Last but not least, no-drain tuna packs! Just stick a fork in one for an easy and amazingly filling snack. StarKist's Tuna Creations are my number-one choice, especially the Sweet & Spicy one. Each 2.6-oz. pouch has 80 - 110 calories, 0.5 - 4g fat, and 14 - 19g protein (PointsPlus® value 2 - 3*). Love, love, love these.

Wow, that's a lot of savory snacks... Happy chewing!
