GIRLS BITE OUT

Time to supercharge your diet, people. Maybe you're eating these things already -- good for you! -- but maybe you're stuck in a food rut that needs a little healthy shake up. Here's some food for thought...

Quinoa
1/4 cup (uncooked): 170 calories, 2.5g fat, 5mg sodium, 30.5g carbs, 3g fiber, 1g sugars, 5.5g protein -- PointsPlus® value 4*

What is it? By now, we're sure you've at least heard of quinoa. You can file the great-tasting South American grain under "Popular for a Reason" -- it's a gluten-free grain (a big bonus these days) that's full of anti-inflammatory phytonutrients and antioxidants. It's also a complete protein (great for vegetarians), loaded with amino acids; plus, it has a good amount of fiber. It's even got some heart-healthy omega-3 fats! Click here for more info from the Whole Grains Council.

How should I enjoy it? Chow on these tasty freezer-aisle meatless burger patties! Or make these easy HG recipes: a hot breakfast cereal, a simple stir-fry, and a big veggie-friendly bowl of goodies!

Chia Seeds
1 tablespoon: 60 calories, 4g fat, 0mg sodium, 4.5g carbs, 4.5g fiber, 0g sugars, 2.5g protein -- PointsPlus® value 1*

What are they? Go ahead, get all the Chia Pet jokes out of your system... Finished? OK, let's talk nutrition. Chia seeds are full of good stuff: fiber, protein, omega-3s, and more. Plus, they expand when added to liquid, forming a gel-like bubble around each one, so eating them can help you feel full. The texture takes a little getting used to, but they're worth trying, for sure!

How should I enjoy 'em? Chomp on chia-based snack bars, like the kinds by Health Warrior (the coconut flavor is ridiculous, in a good way) and Kashi. Lesser Evil makes a bunch of different snacks that are boosted with chia, from chips to popcorn. You can also just mix a spoonful into a bowl of fruit (hey, mango) and yogurt (fat-free Greek).

Swiss Chard
1 cup (raw): 7 calories, 0g fat, 75mg sodium, 1.5g carbs, 0.5g fiber, 0.5g sugars, 0.5g protein -- PointsPlus® value 0*

What is it? When it comes to powerhouse veggies, this leafy green has it going on. Fun fact: Swiss chard is related to beets and (believe it or not) quinoa! Click over here and just look at all the vitamins and nutrients it contains. Give it a try ASAP.

How should I enjoy it? In HG recipes, you can use it in dishes that call for kale -- we still love that leafy green, but if you're looking to change it up, chard rocks. Just keep an eye on it while it cooks -- it's more tender than kale, so it may not take as long to soften. Also try sautéing it up in a pan with a bit of olive oil or low-sodium broth, and dress it with a squeeze of lemon and your favorite spices. So simple, but so good!

Kefir
1 cup low-fat plain kefir: 115 calories, 2.5g fat, 130mg sodium, 13.5g carbs, 0g fiber, 13g sugars, 10g protein -- PointsPlus® value 3*

What is it? Think of kefir as drinkable yogurt. It's got good-for-you cultures and is super nutritious like the spoonable stuff; this is just another way to enjoy it. You know those healthy probiotics you're always hearing about? Kefir's got 'em, and they're fantastic for your digestion. We're also talking calcium, tryptophan, protein, B vitamins... the works. And check out that protein count!

How should I enjoy it? When we want our fix, we go straight for Lifeway products. From fancy flavored beverages (Low-Fat Chocolate Truffle!) to fro-yo style Frozen Kefir (only 90 calories per 1/2 cup), this brand's kinda made kefir a way of... life.
