HG's Mmmm-Mmmm Mexican Hot Chocolate

Mex' Appeal!
Between the heat of the spices and the steamy temperature it's served at, this new cocoa recipe is way hot. So if your town's plagued with snow, this is our way of saying, "Stay toasty!" And if it's not, scope out the iced alternative below the recipe...

Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 5 minutes or less

1 1/2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp. mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 no-calorie sweetener packets (like Truvia or Splenda)
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
Dash cayenne pepper
1/2 cup fat-free milk

In a microwave-safe mug or glass, combine cocoa powder, chocolate chips, sweetener, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper.

Add 1/4 cup very hot water, and stir until mostly dissolved and uniform.

Add milk and another 1/4 cup hot water, and mix well.

Microwave until hot, about 45 seconds.

News flash: If you haven't had hot cocoa spiced with cinnamon and chiles, you're behind the times. This spin on a classic just plain rocks. The only problem? Spiced or not, conventional hot chocolate is a high-calorie affair, what with all that, you know, chocolate. Factor in whole milk or cream, plus spoonfuls of sugar, and it's trouble time. So we set out to make over Mexican hot chocolate, and we gave ourselves the extra challenge of doing it without a packeted mix. Unsweetened cocoa powder brings maximum flavor and minimal calories, allowing you to sweeten it however you like. Mix it up with fat-free milk, mini chocolate chips, those trademark spices, and your no-calorie sweetener of choice... Yes! What can we say? Low-fat cocoa just gets us all hot and bothered...
