Changes to the Dietary Guidelines Are on the Way -- Here's the Need-to-Know Info!
Once every 5 years, the US government revises its Dietary Guidelines to help Americans live healthier. And to help the administration make those decisions, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee provides a 500-plus page report of findings and suggestions. We combed through this year's report, and here are some of the most interesting points...

Most Encouraging: Better Labels. The committee recommends clearer Nutrition Facts labels and Front of Package labels, making it easier for people to understand them and make smart decisions. Love this!

Most Invigorating: Coffee Approval. Strong evidence is presented that having up to 5 cups of coffee a day is not associated with long-term health risks in healthy people. Better still? Other evidence associates drinking coffee with reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Raise your mugs!

Most Controversial: Sugar and Salt Taxes. One suggestion is to tax sugary and high-sodium foods, in the hope it will cause people to eat less of them. The beverage industry is reportedly not pleased...

Most Surprising: Cholesterol Not a Nutrient of Concern. That's right: The DGAC no longer considers cholesterol intake a concern. Why? The committee says that evidence shows no real relationship between dietary cholesterol and total cholesterol in the blood. WOW.

These things aren't guaranteed to be reflected in the Dietary Guidelines, but they're definitely moving on to the next stage. We'll find out what advice gets incorporated later this year!
