Big Changes on the Way at Panera Bread: Clean Ingredients, Animal-Friendly Standards, and Menu Transparency

Panera Bread is the latest in a growing list of food companies planning to ditch controversial ingredients. The chain recently announced a massive plan to clean up the food sold at its bakeries and cafés. What can you expect? Check it out...

By the end of 2016, Panera's food will be completely free of artificial preservatives, colors, sweeteners, and flavors. Team PB has also re-upped on ongoing commitments to animal welfare and clean meat. They're working toward using eggs that come from only cage-free chickens, and nearly all their chicken, ham, and turkey are antibiotic-free. Just another reason to love Panera!

Wondering which changes have already taken effect, and exactly which are to come? The chain has awesomely gone public with a "No No List" of all the ingredients they're nixing by 2016, and the handy key lets you know which ones have already been ousted. For example, aspartame and sucralose are already off-limits; added nitrates/nitrites and high-fructose corn syrup are on their way out. And as of last week, Panera is reportedly serving salads with "clean" dressings only. Certain salad toppings -- like croutons, tortilla strips, and bacon -- aren't quite clean yet. We'd suggest skipping those anyway...

The only bummer in Panera land? The chain recently got rid of its beloved hidden Power menu, which was packed with low-carb/high-protein meals. Accordingly, we'll be updating our Panera Bread Survival Guide, in order to help you make the smartest choices. (Even all-natural menu items can be loaded with calories.) Stay tuned for a brand-new guide, coming next month!
