Once upon a time in Hungryland, Hungry Girl and the HG staff wanted to eat crispy and delicious breaded cheese sticks without having to settle for too-oily fried versions. So they came up with this recipe for baked mozzarella sticks, and everyone lived happily ever after.

Ingredients:
8 sticks light string cheese
1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs
1 1/2 tbsp. whole-wheat flour
1 tsp. Italian seasoning
1/4 cup egg whites or fat-free liquid egg substitute
Optional dip: low-fat marinara sauce
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil, and spray with nonstick spray.
Cut each stick of string cheese in half widthwise, so you have 16 smaller sticks.
In a wide bowl, mix breadcrumbs, flour, and Italian seasoning.
Place cheese sticks in another wide bowl. Top with egg whites/substitute, and toss to coat.
One at a time, shake cheese sticks to remove excess egg, and evenly coat with breadcrumb mixture. Place on the baking sheet, evenly spaced.
Bake for 6 minutes.
Flip cheese sticks. Bake until golden brown on the outside and soft on the inside, about 6 more minutes.
