Hungry Girl Today: 01.26.07

GIRLS BITE OUT

No need to order these over the web; all of these HG must-haves can be

found at your local market...Yay!

1. The Laughing Cow Light Cheese Wedges

(1 wedge: 35 calories, 2g fat, 260mg sodium, 1g carbs, 0g fiber, 1g sugars,

2.5g protein = 1 Point)

We can't say enough good things about this cheese. We often see all THREE

of the fabulous flavors (Original Swiss, Garlic & Herb, and French Onion)

stocked on supermarket shelves, but the Original Swiss is the most common

(and by far the best!). If you're looking for the most delicious, most

spreadable and most meltable cheese to use in sauces, sandwiches and

more, here it is. Located in the refrigerated dairy section of most markets.

2. Nature Valley Fruit Crisps, Cinnamon Apple

(1 pouch: 50 calories, 0g fat, 75mg sodium, 13g carbs, 1g fiber, 10g sugars,

0g protein = 1 Point)

Stocking up on low-cal, portion-controlled dried fruit snacks once meant an

annoying drive over to a specialty diet store or placing an enormous online

order. Uh-uh! These ROCKIN' 50-calorie pouches of cinnamon sweet crispies

(from the granola gurus over at Nature V) have found a home in the snack

aisles of pretty much ALL major grocery chains. And we hope they're here to

stay!

3. Egg Beaters, Original

(1/4 cup: 30 calories, 0g fat, 115mg sodium, 1g carbs, 0g fiber, <1g sugars,

6g protein = 1 Point)

This HG swapping staple is perfect to use in recipes or as your morning meal.

And it's probably the most accessible item on our list. If you don't see these

with the other eggs or in the refrigerated dairy section, check out the frozen

food aisle (they sometimes hide there). We usually stick with the original

kind, but check out their fun flavors like Garden Vegetable and

Southwestern. Each of those is fat-free with just 30 calories per serving, too,

and they're great for omelettes.

4. 94% Fat-Free Popcorn

(6 cups popped, average: 110 calories, 2g fat, 300mg sodium, 25g carbs, 4g

fiber, 10g sugars, 4g protein = 2 Points)

All the cool popcorn companies make healthier popcorn in single-serving

bags now -- Jolly Time, Orville Redenbacher, Pop Secret, etc. You can even

spot a few of the single-serving mini bags in kettle corn flavor (if you're

lucky). A huge serving of this stuff only has around 100 calories, so it's a

great anytime snack -- especially if you LOOOOVE to crunch like we do. It's

good in recipes, too!

5. Fiber One Bran Cereal

(1/2 cup: 60 calories, 1g fat, 105mg sodium, 25g carbs, 14g fiber, 0g sugars,

2g protein = 1/2 Point)

Our fiber-packed obsession doesn't require a trip to any fancy natural foods

store. Find Fiber One right there in the cereal aisle (just remember to get the

straight up Fiber One and not the over-caloried Clusters). Remember, this

cereal isn't just for breakfast. Grind it up and use the low-cal "breadcrumbs"

to bake up guilt-free fried foods or make low-cal piecrusts. Sprinkle it over

yogurt and fruit, or eat it plain as a snack!

6. Light Vanilla Soymilk

(8 oz. 8th Continent: 60 calories, 2g fat, 170mg sodium, 5g carbs, 0g fiber,

5g sugars, 6g protein = 1 Point)

Sure we LOVE our Unsweetened Almond Breeze, but we know it's not always

easy to find. Light vanilla soymilk, with far less fat and calories than whole

milk and far more flavor than skim, can be found on shelves everywhere.

Sometimes it's refrigerated and hangs out with the other milks, and

sometimes it's on the shelves with the boxed milks. 8th Continent's our

favorite brand, but there are others to choose from, too.

7. JELL-O Sugar Free Pudding Snacks

(1 container, average: 60 calories, 1.5g fat, 180mg sodium, 14g carbs, 1g

fiber, 0g sugars, 2g protein = 1 Point)

Who doesn't love pudding? Especially pudding that is low in fat and has just

60 calories a cup! This fantastic treat from Jell-O comes in a slew of insanely

delicious flavors -- and truth be told, some are sort of hard to find (Dulce de

Leche!). But, lucky for us, the more common flavors can be found almost

EVERYWHERE!

8. Smucker's Sugar Free Preserves

(1 tbsp: 10 calories, 0g fat, 0mg sodium, 5g carbs, 0g fiber, 0g sugars, 0g

protein = 0 Points)

Available at pretty much every supermarket in America, this stuff has just 10

calories a tablespoon and comes in oodles of flavors (Red Raspberry

ROCKS!). Use it to sweeten more than just your sandwich. It's also good

mixed into fat-free cottage cheese or yogurt, and it makes a sweet marinade

for chicken and fish dishes. Mmmm!

9. Gerber Fruit Puffs and Veggie Puffs

(80 pieces: 25 calories, 0g fat, 0mg sodium, 6g carbs, 0g fiber, 1g sugars, 0g

protein = 1 Point)

There's no need to be embarrassed shopping for yourself in the baby food

aisle. Really. 80 of these crunchies have just 25 calories, and we'd get our

snacks at Petco for numbers like that (ok, maybe not). They come in a bunch

of fruity flavors, but believe it or not, the Sweet Potato and the Corn are the

best. Woohoo! (Or should we say GooGoo!?)

10. Hellmann's/ Best Foods Dijonnaise

(1 tsp: 5 calories, 0g fat, 70mg sodium, 1g carbs, 0g fiber, 0g sugars, 0g

protein = 0 Points)

This HG staple is a must-have for any fridge 'cuz it serves as a swap for both

mustard and mayo. We'll never know how they manage to get the stuff to

taste sooo creamy and still keep the calorie count so low and the fat

nonexistent. Use it to make guilt-free tuna and chicken salads, on

sandwiches, and for creamy sauces.
