WEEKLY WEIGH-IN

Watch as TWO popular peanut-buttery spreads duke it out in the HG HQ!

Peanut butter is AMAZING. Everyone knows that. But in addition to being
delicious, the stuff (while healthy) packs in LOTS of calories and fat. And
even if it is "good" fat, too much of ANY fat isn't a great idea. So how does
Better'n Peanut Butter (also sold as Peanut Wonder) stack up to our friend
reduced fat PB (made by brands like Jif, Smucker's, Skippy, and Laura
Scudder's)? Read on as these two spreads go head to head...

The Contenders

Better'n Peanut Butter (16-oz. jar, $3.49 - $7.99) - Weighing in at 100
calories, 2.5g fat, 190mg sodium, 13g carbs, 2g fiber, 2g sugars, 4g protein
and a POINTS® value of 2* per 2-tbsp. serving.

Reduced Fat Peanut Butter (18-oz. jar, $2.19 - $2.69) - Weighing in at an
average of 194 calories, 12g fat, 195mg sodium, 14g carbs, 2g fiber, 3g
sugars, 8g protein and a POINTS® value of 4* per 2-tbsp. serving.

Nutritionals

Better'n Peanut Butter - With just 100 calories and 2.5g fat per 2 tbsp., this
stuff is EXTREMELY impressive nutritionally. And there's a low-sodium version
with only 95mg per 2-tbsp. serving -- we like that.

Reduced Fat Peanut Butter - Each 2-tbsp. serving packs in almost TWICE as
many calories and almost FIVE times as much fat as Better'n Peanut Butter.
And almost 200 calories and 12g fat for two tablespoons of anything is never
gonna impress us. Sorry, reduced fat PB!

The Winner - Better'n Peanut Butter -- it's hard to compete with those stats.
Even with reduced fat PB's "good" fats and 4 extra grams of protein per
serving, it still can't stack up to Better'n Peanut Butter in this department. No
chance.

Taste

Better'n Peanut Butter - While the texture of this stuff is close to that of
regular PB, the flavor just isn't an exact match. To us, Better'n Peanut Butter
tastes a bit like a mix of peanut butter and jelly. It's not bad -- sort of peanut-
y and sweet, but not incredibly great on its own.

Reduced Fat Peanut Butter - Reduced fat peanut butter tastes EXACTLY like
regular full fat peanut butter to us. And it should. The calorie count is
practically the same, and the fat count isn't exactly low. Face it, this stuff is
just ever-so-slightly less fatty peanut butter.

The Winner - Reduced Fat Peanut Butter takes this one... no contest. Sorry,
BPB, you just don't taste nearly as good as the real thing.

Recipe Ratings

Better'n Peanut Butter - We LOOOOOVE using Better'n Peanut Butter in
recipes. It adds a nice PB-ish flavor to smoothies, cookies, fudge, sauces,
cakes and more, but it doesn't add all the irritating calories of regular or
reduced fat PB. Simply put, this stuff ROCKS in recipes. No question!

Reduced Fat Peanut Butter - Sure this stuff is good in recipes. Why wouldn't it
be? But when you add it to smoothies, shakes, cakes, etc., be careful, 'cuz
you'll be adding 12 grams of fat for every two tablespoons you shovel in
there. Scary!

The Winner - Better'n Peanut Butter takes it! It serves up REAL PB flavor in
recipes without making 'em super-fatty. YAY!

The votes are in...

It's a Tie! - Here's the deal. Reduced fat peanut butter tastes WAY better if
you're looking for a straight PB swap (and taste is CRAZY-important!). But
for recipes, you simply can't beat Better'n Peanut Butter. And considering
how much better the stats are for Better'n Peanut Butter, we have no choice
but to make this one a TIE. Yes, it's our first-ever Food Fight tie here at the
HG HQ. And we feel good about it. Each of today's peanut-y contenders has
its strengths and its weaknesses, and we simply can't say one deserves to
win or is better overall. So there.

Congratulations to both of today's super spreads!!!!

***FYI, we are well aware of other PB options out there -- powdered PB,
alternative nut butters, organic and natural peanut butters, etc. HG Food
Fights simply pit TWO popular competing foods/products against each other.
They aren't the ONLY two out there, just two products we deem battle-
worthy!
