Hungry Girl Today: 12.06.07

WEEKLY WEIGH-IN

Watch as TWO vanilla-flavored milk substitutes battle it out at the HG HQ.

Which one will prevail???

So few calorie and fat counting folks drink actual milk these days. While skim

milk was super-popular in decades past, now store shelves are brimming

with delicious non-dairy milk substitutes that offer super nutritionals. Today

TWO of HG's favorite vanilla-flavored milk swaps will duke it out. Who will

win? Read on for the full scoop...

The Contenders

Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze

PER SERVING (1 cup): 40 calories, 3g fat, 180mg sodium, 2g carbs, 1g fiber,

0g sugars, 1g protein -- POINTS® value 1*

Light Vanilla Soymilk (Sweetened), Average

PER SERVING (1 cup): 70 calories, 2g fat, 142mg sodium, 7.5g carbs, 0 - 1g

fiber, 6g sugars, 6g protein -- POINTS® value 1 - 2*

Nutritionals, Ingredients and More...

Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze - Almond Breeze is an all-natural, non-

dairy beverage made from real almonds. It's sugar-free and contains no

artificial sweeteners. It's gluten, cholesterol & lactose free, an excellent

source of calcium and vitamins D & E, and a good source of vitamin A. All

that and it STILL clocks in at just 40 calories a cup. YES!!!

Light Vanilla Soymilk - Made from soy, this too is usually dairy-free, gluten-

free, cholesterol-free, and a solid source of vitamins and calcium.

Impressive, though it does contain more calories -- typically about 30 more

per cup. Sure, on average, it has a full gram less fat than its competitor, but

nearly double the calories cancels that out (plus Almond Breeze's fat comes

from heart-healthy almonds, so it's good fat!).

The Winner - Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze takes it! 40 calories per 8-

oz. serving is INSANELY impressive. And it's STILL packed with vitamins,

calcium and other good stuff.

Taste

Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze - We looooooove the way this stuff

tastes, 'cuz it's creamy and has a nice vanilla flavor. It's NOT sweet, so if

you're expecting a pre-sweetened beverage, this isn't it (they do make a

sweetened vanilla version, but that one has more calories than even light

vanilla soymilk). It's got a slightly thin consistency, but it's still not quite as

thin and watery as skim milk. And it tastes GREAT over cereal.

Light Vanilla Soymilk - We also love the taste of light vanilla soymilk. It's

certainly sweeter than the Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze, but ranks

about the same in terms of vanilla-ness. If you are sensitive to soy or dislike

soymilk flavor, you might not be a fan of this stuff -- but everyone else will

likely enjoy it. Yum! BTW, there a few unsweetened vanilla soymilks out

there, but they're usually hard to find and not nearly as delicious as UVAB.

The Winner - It's a TIE! WE dig both of these dairy substitutes too much to

choose one over the other in the taste department. They both ROCK!

Recipe Ratings

Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze - Yowsa! There's sooooo much you can

do with Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze. We use it in smoothies, sauces,

dressings, desserts -- you name it. And because it's so low in calories yet

contains some fat, it's a fabulous way to add creaminess and flavor to foods

without adding a whole lot of calories. It's magical!

Light Vanilla Soymilk - Light vanilla soymilk is GREAT for cooking, too. It's

also a terrific ingredient to use in smoothies and sauces. But because it's

slightly sweet, it's not as versatile as the Unsweetened Vanilla Almond

Breeze, which can add creamy vanilla flavor without sweetness to any

recipe. And again, if you are sensitive to soy or soy flavor, you'll want to

avoid cooking or creating recipes with this stuff.

The Winner - Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze!!! It's life-changing,

people! We make crazy-low-cal lattes, blended bevs and puddings with this

stuff. We're addicts!

The Votes are In!

And the winner is... UNSWEETENED VANILLA ALMOND BREEZE!!

With a long shelf life (it comes in a box and doesn't even need to be

refrigerated until opened), this low-calorie, delicious milk substitute is almost

too good to be true. While we'll always have a soft spot in our hearts for light

vanilla soymilk (especially the ones by 8th Continent and Silk!), it simply

cannot compare to Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze. Look for UVAB in

your local supermarket or natural foods store where the boxed milks are

stocked (not in the refrigerated section!) -- or buy it online. (Pssst... we've

found that both Whole Foods and Trader Joe's often carry the brand -- just

make sure to grab the unsweetened one!)

Congratulations to both of today's dairy-free competitors!

CHEW ON THIS:

Today, December 6th, is National Gazpacho Day. Gazpacho is a cold,

typically low-fat and low-calorie soup. We prefer ours chunky, a little spicy,

and made with fresh veggies and shrimp. Mmmmmmm!
