Hungry Girl Today: 06.16.08

Spotted on Shelves...

Pepperidge Farm Baked Naturals - They're baked, and they're natural (hence
the name), but these new crunchy offerings (Wheat Crisps, Pretzel Thins and
Snack Sticks, in various and sundry flavors) from the peeps at Pepp F. also
taste great. So great, in fact, that you may want to break the box down into
single servings or keep the stuff in another part of the house (or locked in a
cabinet!) -- if you don't, there's a good chance you'll snarf down an entire
box without thinking about it. Don't say we didn't warn you. A serving of each
of these snacks (11 - 17 pieces) has 110 - 140 calories, 0 - 6g fat, <1 - 2g
fiber and a POINTS® value of 2 - 3*.

South Beach Living Hot Sandwich Melts - Cheese + Meat + Sauce + Whole
Wheat Buns = the new South Beach Living Hot Sandwich Melts. These fridge
kits are great for when you're crunched for time. In Turkey Santa Fe (350
calories, 15g fat, 8g fiber -- POINTS® value 7*) and Oven Roasted Ham &
Swiss (320 calories, 11g fat, 8g fiber -- POINTS® value 7*). Some assembly
required.

Brach's 100 Calorie Packs, Orchard Fruit Tiny Gummi Bears - If you're the
type of person who appreciates cute food, your head may explode when you
catch a glimpse of these teeny tiny colorful gummis. Each pack (100 calories,
0g fat, 0g fiber -- POINTS® value 2*) contains 48 itty bitty bears in a lovely
array of colors and flavors. It's crowded in that bag, peeps! Made from real
fruit juice, these bears are loaded with vitamin C -- 60% the RDA in each
pack!

Tomato Alert!!!

Wondering what to make of this whole tomato salmonella fiasco? Here's the
scoop. The FDA is recommending that people do NOT eat raw red Roma
tomatoes, raw red plum tomatoes, raw red round tomatoes, or products
containing them (unless said tomatoes have been grown and harvested in
select areas listed on the FDA website). Restaurants and grocery stores have
been advised not to serve or sell these tomatoes, as well. Tomatoes not
associated with this salmonella scare are cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes,
tomatoes sold with the vine still attached, and tomatoes grown at home. For
more information on this, click here for the latest updates. FYI, experts say
simply washing your tomatoes really well is NOT enough to get rid of the
contamination, and the FDA does not recommend cooking these tomatoes
either. So stick with those tomato types not associated with the outbreak --
at least for the time being!

The Buzz...

Another hot book find, people! Need a little help figuring out what to believe
when it comes to all the conflicting info about your health? The Healthy
Skeptic is a MUST-READ! It's packed with info that will help you figure out
what you should and shouldn't believe (and why) when it comes to health-
related hype. The book's author, Robert Davis, is a close personal pal of
ours, and he explains (in very simple terms!) how to evaluate studies. He
also reveals fantastic resources for unbiased information. Simply put, THIS
BOOK ROCKS! Click here for more info or to order a copy. ***Speaking of
being a "healthy skeptic", the Grocery Manufacturers Association recently
released a guide designed to provide accurate info on high-fructose corn
syrup. The guide highlights the findings of an expert panel at The University
of Maryland Center for Food, Nutrition, and Agriculture Policy. The panel
concluded, "HFCS does not appear to contribute to overweight and obesity
any differently than any other energy sources." In other words, high-fructose
corn syrup is no different than other caloric sweeteners -- it can be part of a
healthy lifestyle as long as it's used in moderation. We've been hearing that
same thing from our nutrition expert friends for a few years now -- good
news! ***We knew THIS was bound to happen... A Seattle woman is suing
some major chain restaurants because she claims they have derailed her
diet (click here for the story that likely led to this lawsuit). While the suit may
be extreme, in some odd way we're on board with it. We support ANYTHING
at all that can help FORCE food companies and restaurants to be truthful and
careful about their nutritional info. More on that as the story develops. And,
that's all we've got. HG out!

Book Tour News! We promised you new tour dates were on the way, and
here's one now! HG will be hitting up Denver on July 29th for another rockin'
event -- books will be signed, prizes will be given, snacks will be free! Click
here for the full scoop and here to RSVP. Don't own the super-adorable HG
cookbook yet? Snag one NOW -- they're available online and in stores!
