Hungry Girl Today: 08.08.08

Good news! We're here with the 411 on no-guilt chips. Read on for the
scoop... and enjoy the rest of potato chip season!

Popchips Potato Chips

PER SERVING (1 oz., about 19 - 22 chips): 120 calories, 4 - 4.5g fat, 280 -
310mg sodium, 20g carbs, 1g fiber, 0 - 2g sugars, 1 - 2g protein -- POINTS®
value 3*

What Are They? Never baked, never fried, these chips are POPPED, baby!!!

Flavors: Original, Barbeque, Salt & Pepper, Sea Salt & Vinegar, Parmesan
Garlic

Pros: They taste delicious, come in lots of fun flavors, and are low in calories
and fat. They also come in individual-serving bags as well as multi-serving
bags.

Cons: Ummmm, we really can't think of any.

HG Secret Tip: These can be found at Trader Joe's under the name "Popped
Chips". Same EXACT chips. Nearly identical stats. Better prices. Woohoo!

Frito-Lay Light Potato Chips

PER SERVING (1 oz., about 15 - 20 chips): 70 - 75 calories, 0g fat, 190 -
230mg sodium, 16 - 17g carbs, 1g fiber, 0 - <1g sugars, 2 - 3g protein --
POINTS® value 1*

What Are They? Very low-calorie potato chips, made with Olestra.

Flavors: Original Lay's, Original Ruffles, Cheddar & Sour Cream Ruffles

Pros: They come in different varieties and flavors (including the
Ruffles "ridged" line!), are fat-free with low calorie counts, and taste really
good.

Cons: They're made with Olestra. And that stuff still has an AWFUL
reputation!

HG's Two Cents: We like these chips, and we have, at times, loaded up on
them without feeling ANY effects of Olestra. We think the Olestra "issues"
were magnified by the media and affect only a select few people.

Baked! Potato Crisps

PER SERVING (1 oz., approx. 10 - 14 chips): 110 - 120 calories, 1.5 - 3.5g
fat, 150 - 210mg sodium, 21 - 23g carbs, 2g fiber, 2 - 3g sugars, 2g protein --
POINTS® value 2*

What Are They? Various types of potato chips by Frito-Lay that are baked
and therefore low in fat and calories.

Flavors: Original Lay's, Barbeque Lay's, Cheddar & Sour Cream Lay's, Sour
Cream & Onion Lay's, Original Ruffles, Cheddar & Sour Cream Ruffles

Pros: These are probably the best-tasting chips on the planet. Not kidding.

Cons: They're oddly addictive. Beware! They taste so good that we HAVE to
finish every bag we open, be it one serving or 15 servings! EEEKS!

More From HG: We're not kidding about finishing every bag we open. It's a
problem, and therefore we avoid these chips as much as humanly possible.

Kettle Bakes Potato Chips

PER SERVING (1 oz., approx. 18 - 22 chips): 120 calories, 3g fat, 115 -
170mg sodium, 20 - 21g carbs, 2g fiber, 0 - 1g sugars, 3g protein --
POINTS® value 2*

What Are They? Baked chips made from all-natural ingredients like freshly
sliced potatoes.

Flavors: Lightly Salted, Hickory Honey Barbeque, Aged White Cheddar

Pros: They're baked not fried, have good nutritional facts, come in fun
flavors, and taste good.

Cons: They're a little hard to find (especially the elusive 100-calorie bags the
company offers), and they're a tiny bit dry.

HG Adds: We like these but don't LOVE 'em. However, it is easier to stop
eating these than it is to stop chowing down on Baked! chips -- that's an
added bonus!

Brothers-All-Natural Potato Crisps

PER SERVING (1 bag, about 1/2 cup): 35 - 45 calories, 0g fat, 190 - 340mg
sodium, 8 - 10g carbs, 1g fiber, 0 - 1g sugars, 1 - 2g protein -- POINTS®
value 0 - 1*

What Are They? Freeze-dried and completely fat-free chips.

Flavors: Original with Sea Salt, Hint of Szechuan Pepper & Fresh Chives, Hint
of Fresh Onion & Fresh Garlic, Hint of Black Pepper & Sea Salt

Pros: They're SUPER low in calories and come in small bags that have just
35 - 45 calories each. WE LOVE THAT!

Cons: We like the way these taste a LOT. We don't mind their dryness -- and
to us they taste like instant mashed potatoes when you chew 'em (which we
kinda like!). That being said, there are MANY people who dislike these chips
with intense passion. So try 'em or don't -- your call!

HG Bonus Info: These were recently reformulated, which is why some bags
have 35 calories and some have 45. The newer formula has 45 calories and
a POINTS® value of 1* per bag. If you order online, you'll get those. You
can still find some of the 35-calories bags at Costco.

Pringles Light Fat Free Potato Crisps

PER SERVING (1 oz., about 14 - 15 crisps): 70 calories, 0g fat, 150 - 190mg
sodium, 15g carbs, 1g fiber, 1g sugars, 1 - 2g protein -- POINTS® value 1*

What Are They? Unnaturally uniform "Stepford" chips with impressive stats.

Flavors: Original, Sour Cream & Onion, Barbecue

Pros: They're neat-looking and stack well. They taste good if you like
Pringles. They're low in fat. And there are portion-controlled options!

Cons: They're a little scary. There's the Olestra thing again. They're a little
outdated. And they don't taste as good as a lot of other guilt-free chips. Plus
you'll want to eat these things in fat stacks -- and that can mean eating 20
chips at once. AHHHHHH!

HG's Bottom Line: We'd eat these if we REALLY wanted chips and none of our
favorites were available.
