Hungry Girl Today: 1.12.09

Spotted on Shelves...

Special K Crackers - Special K, you are really branching out! The latest
release? Crackers. There are 2 flavors -- Multi-Grain and Italian Tomato &
Herb. A 17-cracker portion has 90 calories, 2g fat, 16 - 17g carbs, 1 - 2g
fiber, and 2g protein (POINTS® value 2*). They come in both 90-cal snack
packs and regular boxes. We tried 'em -- they're super-sweet (almost like
biscuits) but really good. And the Italian ones remind us of sweet pizza.
Mmmmm!

Quaker True Delights - Our pals at Quaker have outdone themselves with
these brand-new, decadent, nut-packed bars. In Dark Chocolate Raspberry
Almond, Toasted Coconut Banana Macadamia Nut, and Honey Roasted
Cashew Mixed Berry, each bar has 140 calories, 3.5 - 5g fat, 23 - 24g carbs,
3g fiber, and 2g protein (POINTS® value 2 - 3*). Heads up! The coconut
banana bar is one of the best snack foods we've ever tasted.

College Inn Culinary Broths and Bold Stocks - We had no idea that soup
base could be this exciting. These fancy new broths (in Thai Coconut Curry
and White Wine & Herb) and stocks (in Rotisserie Chicken and Beef Sirloin)
are FANTASTIC! A cup of each has 5 - 45 calories, 0g fat, 1 - 5g carbs, 0 -
0.5g fiber, and 0 - 7g protein (POINTS® value 0 - 1*). FYI -- these are very
high in sodium, so if that's a concern, skip them or just use sparingly in
recipes as opposed to slurping 'em straight.

HG BREAKING NEWS... Olive Garden and Red Lobster Spill Nutritional Stats!

The infamous Olive Garden and the home of the crimson crustacean, Red
Lobster, have finally released nutritional info for their ENTIRE menus! While
both chains have been providing stats for their "light" menu selections for a
while now, it's good to know what else we can enjoy guilt-free besides the
pasta marinara and the same old shrimp cocktail -- and what to AVOID at all
costs! We did a little snooping and found some stats that may surprise you.
Those addictive bottomless breadsticks at Olive Garden have 150 cals and
2.5g fat each (POINTS® value 2 - 3*), and a serving of that Alfredo dipping
sauce they're served with has a whopping 380 calories and 35g fat
(POINTS® value 10 - 11*). Eeeks! But a lunch portion of the Garden's zesty,
veggie-packed Shrimp Primavera contains a reasonable 510 calories and 9g
fat (POINTS® value 10 - 11*). As for Red Lobster, the Bayou Seafood
Gumbo may seem like a decent starter, but it packs a wallop with 470
calories and 17g fat per bowl (POINTS® value 10 - 11*). Stick with a bowl of
the low-fat, 160-calorie Manhattan Clam Chowder instead (POINTS® value
3*). For dinner, the Garlic-Grilled Jumbo Shrimp (complete with garlic butter
sauce!) is a great option with just 365 calories and 6g fat (POINTS® value 7 -
8*) -- but stay far away from the Seaside Shrimp Trio with its 1000+
calories and 58 grams of fat (POINTS® value 25*). Click here and here to
view nutritionals for all the other items on the menus. And do it BEFORE the
next time you visit one of these places.

Free Ice Cream and a Chance to Meet HG's Lisa!

Sure it's cold out for most of the country. But that doesn't mean you should
pass up an opportunity to snag a FREE scoop of ice cream -- especially when
it's new, DELICIOUS, and guilt-free ice cream. Baskin-Robbins' brand-new
BRight Choices line is HG-approved! Check out the Premium Churned Ice
Creams in Vanilla, Milk Chocolate, Raspberry Chip, Butter Almond Crunch,
and Pineapple Coconut (the first three are light and the last two are reduced-
fat with no sugar added!). There's also Fat-Free Vanilla fro yo and
Strawberry sorbet. Each 2.5-oz. scoop has 80 - 140 calories and 0 - 7g fat
(POINTS® value 2 - 3*). To check out these flavors and get a FREE 2.5-oz.
scoop, visit a participating BR location this Thursday, 1/15/09, between 11am
and 10pm -- just bring proof of a gym membership and your scoop is free!
And if you're in or near NYC on that day, head over to the Baskin-Robbins at
140 E. 34th St. to meet Lisa (a.k.a. Hungry Girl herself) LIVE and in person.
She'll be meeting, greeting, and scoopin' from 12:30 to 1:30pm. Woohoo!

The Buzz...

New stuff at The 'Bucks! We're slamming the coffee co. tomorrow with our
zucchini nut muffin swap, so we're showing it some love today. Check out the
new tea-based drinks -- Full Leaf Tazo Tea Lattes and Tazo Tea Infusions
have arrived! The Lattes have just 120 calories and 0g fat (POINTS® value
2*) per Tall cup made with skim, while the juice-containing Infusions have
190 - 240 calories and no fat (POINTS® value 4 - 5*) per Tall. Don't miss the
delicious, antioxidant-packed fun. ***If you like itty-bitty burgers, you
should know that Burger King is test-marketing them at a few locations on
the East Coast. Looks like the BK has tried this before... check out this '80s
commercial for 'em we found. Classic! ***Ooooh, is Diet Coke in hot water?
Seems like it. The FDA issued a warning letter objecting to the name and
label of Diet Coke Plus, which describes the soda as "Diet Coke with Vitamins
& Minerals." Apparently, food or beverages called "Plus" need to contain at
least 10% more nutrients than similar products. We say you shouldn't be
looking to diet sodas to get your vitamins. Pop a multi and sip a Coke Zero,
instead -- it tastes better, too. ***Heads up! Next month TWO new and
awesome flavors of 60-calorie Jell-O Sugar Free Pudding Snacks will hit
shelves -- cinnamon roll and Boston cream pie. YOWSA!!! Okay, that's all
we've got... HG out!
