Hungry Girl Today: 2.02.09

Spotted on Shelves...

100 Calorie Packs Mini Cakesters - In Oreo and Golden Oreo, each 3-
Cakester package has 100 calories, 4.5g fat, 15g carbs, 0 - <1g fiber, and
1g protein (POINTS® value 2*). They're squishy and soft with a delicious
creamy layer in the middle. The only problem is they're so good, you'll want
to keep ripping packages open and popping more and more of 'em into your
mouth. Consider yourself warned. (And click here for a coupon!)

Kettle Cuisine Soups - Check out these fancy schmancy, gluten-free, all-
natural soups in the freezer aisle. We've tried (and loved) the Organic Carrot
& Coriander Soup and the Tomato Soup with Garden Vegetables, each with
100 - 110 calories, 3.5 - 4g fat, 14 - 15g carbs, 5g fiber, and 1 - 3g protein
(POINTS® value 1 - 2*) per 10-oz., microwaveable, single-serving bowl.
They come in a bunch of other varieties as well. (Read labels carefully --
some have better stats than others.) Click here to see where to find 'em or
here to order online.

South Beach Living Fiber Fit Granola Bars - We've recently tried these
granola bars, which come in Mocha and S'mores. Both are good, but we're
REALLY crazy about the S'mores (and its insane top layer of marshmallow-
ish goo!). Each bar has 120 calories, 4g fat, 25g carbs, 9g fiber, and 2g
protein (POINTS® value 2*). If you can get your hands on these, DO IT!

Lean Cuisine Mania!

Heads up, frozen-food-chewers!!!! Lean Cuisine's rolling out a SLEW of
new "recipes" in limited distribution. (Hopefully, if they're a hit, they'll show
up on shelves everywhere.) There are almost too many to name... but okay,
we'll do it! Here they are: Angel Hair Pomodoro, Beef & Broccoli, Beef Chow
Fun, Beef Pot Roast, Cheddar Potatoes with Broccoli, Chicken Marsala,
Chicken Teriyaki Stir Fry, Classic Macaroni & Beef, Fiesta Grilled Chicken,
Classic Five Cheese Lasagna, Five Cheese Rigatoni, Linguine Carbonara,
Orange Chicken, Pasta Romano with Bacon, and Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto
Chicken! These each have 210 - 360 calories, 2 - 9g fat, and a POINTS®
value of 4 - 7*. More info to come once we taste 'em. BTW, we'll be adding
Tofu Shirataki noodles and steamed veggies to these entrées to make them
more filling ('cuz that's how we roll).

Mushrooms: The New Mood Food...

Feeling a little blue? Chomp on a portabello! Mushrooms are the only natural
fresh veggie with vitamin D, which can help elevate your mood. And since it's
tough to get enough vitamin D during winter months (due to lack of sunlight),
now's the perfect time to up your intake of the friendly fungus. Mushrooms
also have lots of energy-enhancing B vitamins typically found in meat, so
they're great for vegetarians. And get this... scientists are creating super
mushrooms enhanced with EXTRA vitamin D by exposing them to fancy
ultraviolet lights. In the meantime, click here and here for some recipes from
our lovely and talented friends at The Mushroom Council. Pssst... we
recommend using Egg Beaters instead of eggs and nonstick spray instead of
oil to save calories and fat.

The Buzz...

Do something good for women. Join Campbell's AdDRESS Your Heart
campaign. Click here to vote on the dress Jane Krakowski -- a.k.a. the
insanely funny Jenna on TV's 30 Rock -- will wear to the Woman's Day Red
Dress Awards. For each vote, Campbell will donate $1 to the American Heart
Association's Go Red For Women movement. Pssst... we voted for Simply
Red! ***The peanut butter scare is getting scarier! The processing plant
linked to the current Salmonella outbreak is now recalling every peanut
product it's made in the last two years. Many food products and even pet
foods have now been recalled. Click here ASAP for the latest updates, and
click here for a full list of recalled retail items. ***Attention, OJ lovers! (We
mean orange juice, of course -- not "him".) There's an exciting new
beverage on the way. Trop50 (sounds so cool!) comes from our pals at
Tropicana, and it's due to hit shelves next month. This light orange juice
drink has HALF the calories and sugar of regular orange juice, and it contains
no artificial sweeteners (yep, it's sweetened with stevia). FYI, it's replacing
Tropicana Light 'N Healthy. ***Speaking of juice, new research shows that
regularly drinking apple juice could actually delay Alzheimer's disease. Click
for more on that. ***Last month 55 busy cooks spent 60 hours whipping up
the world's biggest cheesecake. Apparently it made it into the Guinness
World Records without much competition. The thing weighed TWO TONS!
Wonder how many calories and POINTS® that is?! ***And while we're on the
subject of calories, cutting out extra calories could actually improve memory.
In a recently published study, women 50 - 80 years old who reduced their
caloric intake by 30% not only lost weight, but they also scored dramatically
better than non-calorie-cutters on verbal memory tests. The study
participants were all of normal weight or slightly overweight. Cool stuff!
That's all we've got. HG out!

CHEW ON THIS:
Yesterday, February 1st, was National Baked Alaska Day. Baked Alaska is a
mixture of egg whites and sugar on ice cream over cake, which is then
cooked, and sometimes doused with rum and set on fire. (Pssst... be careful
when dousing things with rum and setting them on fire.)
