Hungry Girl Today: 6.15.09

Spotted on Shelves...

Crispy Green Crispy Bananas 100% Freeze-Dried Bananas - If you like the
idea of banana chips but not all the fat and calories they carry, check out
these freeze-dried treats. All bananas. No oil. SO GOOD! A single-serving
bag has just 55 calories, 0g fat, 13g carbs, 2g fiber, and 1g protein
(POINTS® value 1*). Crush 'em and sprinkle on yogurt or low-fat ice cream,
or eat them straight from the bag. TWO YUMS UP!!!

Kellogg's Cinnabon Snack Bars - If you need to kick a Cinnabon craving
quickly, these bars are WAY less dangerous than a trip to the food court.
Each bar has 150 calories, 4 - 4.5g fat, 26 - 27g carbs, <1g fiber, and 1g
protein (POINTS® value 3*), and they come in Original and Caramel. Have
you tried 'em? Let us know!

New Popchips Flavors - Seems like news about Popchips is POPPING up
everywhere. This week, it's all about two brand-new flavors. The popped
potato chips are now available in both Sour Cream & Onion and Cheddar. A
serving of either flavor (about 20 chips) has 120 calories, 4g fat, 20g carbs,
1g fiber, and 2g protein (POINTS® value 3*) -- and there are 100-calorie
bags with a POINTS® value of 2* each. Yes, we've tried them. And YES,
they're awesome! But what did you expect?

Fast Food: And the Award Goes To...

The results of the latest Zagat Fast-Food Survey are in! Rather than bore you
with ALL the details, we've cut through the fat (so to speak) and we're giving
you the results you care about. Here they are...

* Best Coffee honors went to Starbucks, with Dunkin' Donuts finishing
second. Peet's Coffee & Tea came in third place.

* In the Grilled Chicken category, Chick-fil-A was named best, followed by
Panera Bread. Wendy's placed third.

* In terms of Best Salads, Panera Bread dominated. Wendy's came in
second place, and McDonald's took the number-three spot.

* Among fast-food mega chains (the ones with more than 5,000 U.S.
locations), Wendy's came in first for Top Food and Top Facilities, while
Subway was voted Most Popular and earned top honors for Service and
Healthy Options.

* As for fast-food chains with under 5,000 U.S. locations, Panera Bread was
voted Most Popular and took the number-one spots for Top Facilities and
Healthy Options. Top Food and Top Service ratings went to In-N-Out Burger.
(You can order a single Protein Style burger there, with tomato and sliced
onion, plus ketchup and mustard instead of sauce -- that clocks in at just 160
calories, 8g fat, and a POINTS® value of 3*. Woohoo!)

Food on Screen...

The Next Food Network Star - Season Five of this competition series is
underway, and we can't help but wonder if this year's winner will be a real
star with staying power. (What ever happened to Season Three's Amy?!) So
far we're enjoying Jeffrey, we're unimpressed (and are a little annoyed) with
Debbie, and we're hoping that dietitian Katie steps it up a bit
(zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!). Check out the show Sunday nights at 9/8c. We love it!!!

Food, Inc. - If you're one of those ignorance-is-bliss types when it comes to
icky information, this movie is NOT for you. It promises, "You'll never look at
dinner the same way again." In limited release, the film apparently exposes
some scary truths about what we eat and how it's produced, with an
emphasis on the obesity epidemic and corporate control of our nation's food
industry. Click here to watch the trailer and here for more info.

Top Chef Masters - We're Top Chef obsessed, so we're hoping this spin-off
will entertain us 'til the next season premieres. Bravo's Top Chef Masters pits
world-renowned chefs against one another in a format similar to the original
series'. The winner will get a hundred grand for the charity of his or her
choice. Gotta be honest, we're not super-familiar with some of the famed
faces -- but competitor Art Smith is a fellow contributor over at Yahoo! Food.
(Hi, Art!) Tune in Wednesday nights at 10/9c, and let us know what you
think.

The Buzz...

Does an apple a day keep hunger away? In recent years, research has
shown that it just might. One study tested this theory by giving participants
either apple juice, applesauce, peeled apples, or nothing at all 15 minutes
before eating a meal. Turns out the apple-eaters (the ones who ate the
actual peeled fruit) took in an average of 187 fewer calories during their
meal. Interesting. We've been apple-obsessed FOREVER. (Go, Fujis!) We
even devoted an entire chapter to the wonderfruit in Hungry Girl 200 Under
200 -- click here to see photos of all the apple-packed recipes! ***In
horrifying yet you-can't-help-but-read news, the famous ice cream
shop/family eatery Friendly's has gone public with its nutritional stats, and
said stats are anything BUT friendly. O.M.G. Click and prepare to be
completely appalled. (470-calorie salad dressing, 1,310-calorie sundae,
1,010-calorie chicken platter... AHHH!) ***Fiber alert! Kellogg is planning to
pump fiber into a bunch of its cereals. When all is said and done, 80% of
Kellogg cereals will have at least 2.5 grams of fiber per serving. The fun
starts in August with fiber-infused Froot Loops and Apple Jacks. ***Get this:
Jamba Juice is rolling out a slew of salads, sandwiches, wraps, and
flatbreads, and they sound GREAT. The new menu items arrive this week in
select California locations, and they'll go national within the next year. We're
most excited about the flatbreads, which we hear are protein-packed with
350 calories or less per serving. Can't wait to try 'em! That's all we've got.
HG out!
