Hungry Girl Today: 6.8.09
Spotted on Shelves...
Musselman's Healthy Picks No Sugar Added Apple Sauce in Key Lime
Cupuacu, Raspberry Acai, and Blueberry Pomegranate - This is a must-try
for people who love flavored applesauce. Each 4-oz. cup has 70 calories, 0g
fat, 17g carbs, and 3g fiber (POINTS® value 1*). Our favorite flavor, HANDS
DOWN, is the Key Lime Cupuacu, which incidentally tastes a lot like
pineapple and nothing like lime. We had no clue what cupuacu meant but
looked it up. It's a tree. Enjoy!
Gorton's Signature Grilled Tilapia - Nothing weird or fishy-tasting about these
80-calorie, protein-packed, low-fat frozen fillets (POINTS® value 2* each).
They ROCK. Eat TWO with some veggies and/or salad for a fast, easy and
delicious meal. Yay!
Veggie Patch Meatless Meatballs - Oooooh... These soy-based meatballs
have great stats AND they taste fantastic. WE LOVE THEM!!! A serving (3 -
4 "meatballs") has 120 calories, 4.5g fat, 7g carbs, 4g fiber, and 16g protein
(POINTS® value 2*). Look for these in the produce section of supermarkets
and Costco (click here to search locations).
Lying Labels and Food Fables!
You know we are ALL about giving you the full scoop when it comes to the
truthfulness of food labels. Yes, we've tested products (and heard from
HGers who've had products tested) only to learn that the numbers on the
packaging are way off. And when that happens, we tell you. Sometimes
these products are immediately yanked from store shelves after we write
about the potentially inaccurate stats, and then they return with NEW
nutritional info a few months later. We LOVE when that happens. Of course,
we can't test EVERYTHING out there. Here are some general things you
should know when it comes to the accuracy of nutritional stats...
1. Small mom-and-pop companies are more likely to have mislabeled
products than big brands. We see this time and time again. That's just the
way it is.
2. The FDA allows companies to be up to 20% off on the nutritional stats on
packaged foods. So something that is labeled as having 150 calories could, in
fact, have 180 calories. Something touting 14g fat could have closer to 17g.
Yes, annoying.
3. The nutritional info provided by restaurant chains is sometimes WAY off.
The stats listed on websites, on menus, and in pamphlets are based on the
specific amounts of ingredients that should be going into each dish. But the
nutritional values in the actual food you're being served can be different due
to stuff like oversized portions and careless or uninformed cooks. ("Oops, I
used a quarter-cup of oil to saute that chicken instead of a tbsp. Oh, well!")
We're about to head over to the lab to test a bunch more products. What
should we take with us? Which products do you think can't be trusted? Email
us ASAP and let us know. We'll get answers and do our best to help make
changes where needed. Together we can make a difference, people! In the
meantime, keep this in mind: If something SEEMS too good to be true, IT
PROBABLY IS. To read more about the accuracy of nutritional labels, click
here (and check out the video of HG's Lisa on the recent book tour!).
Coming Soon! EXCITING Items on the Way...
Break the good news to your face... These new foods are launching shortly!
New Soups... We know most people don't exactly consider July to be a time
for soup, but this news is cool nevertheless. Later this summer, Progresso
will launch a brand-new High Fiber line -- no-MSG, no-artificial-flavor soups
with a whopping 7g fiber per serving. They'll come in FOUR flavors, including
Chicken Tuscany and Creamy Tomato Basil. The Progresso soupsters will
also release a few new flavors of their Light soups (OMG, Chicken &
Dumpling!), so look out for those as well. Woohoo!
New Vitas... Yes, people. A BRAND-NEW VitaTop flavor is on the way. We're
not REALLLLY supposed to be telling you what it is yet, but we are not always
well behaved, so here goes. Wait... maybe we shouldn't reveal it just yet.
Hmmmmm... Oh, what the heck. It's... it's... IT'S CHOCOLATE MINT!!! Yes, a
mintylicious chocolate Vita is coming soon (within a month or so) to a
Vitalicious.com near you. EXCITING!!! You lovers of Thin Mints Girl Scout
Cookies are going to FREEEEAK! More info as it becomes available...
New Yogurts... As we mentioned last week, the new 50-calorie, fat-free, 5g-
of-fiber HG-approved Fiber One yogurt hits shelves this summer. Well,
there's even MORE yogurty goodness on the way! A few months from now,
an exciting yogurt-based DESSERT line will emerge. It'll be called Yoplait
Delights, and each of the low-fat yogurt parfaits will have just 100 calories.
Flavors will include Chocolate Raspberry, Triple Berry, Lemon Torte, and
Creme Caramel. And in the fall, the little-known just-add-milk-and-blend
Yoplait Smoothies will go national. They're frozen fruit with Yoplait yogurt
pieces -- in Strawberry Banana, Triple Berry, and Strawberry Mango
Pineapple. You can make crazy-low-cal smoothies if you pair these with
Unsweetened Almond Breeze!
The Buzz...
***New poll alert! Would you want to listen to a Hungry Girl radio show? Do
you think high-fructose corn syrup is evil? Do you use iPhone and PDA apps
for cooking? Click here to take our latest poll. PLLLEEEEEEZE?! Polls are fun,
fun, fun! Click NOW. DO IT! ***Do you live in one of America's FITTEST
cities? According to the 2009 ACSM American Fitness Index report, the top
FIVE in-shape metropolitan areas to live in the U.S. are 1. Washington, DC,
2. Minneapolis-St. Paul, 3. Denver, 4. Boston, and 5. San Francisco. Click for
more on that. ***Here's a helpful tidbit for you. BEWARE OF THE BUFFET.
When there's a variety of food choices, our eyes can trick us into
underestimating the amount of food we're eating, causing us to overeat by
around 10%. Over the course of a year, this could lead to roughly 20 pounds
of weight gain. ACK! ***Useless fact of the day: Chocolate is impervious to
changes in the economy. When times are good, people celebrate with it. And
when things are not so good, chocolate consoles them. Our chocolate pick of
the day? Hershey's 100 Calorie Bars. That's all we've got. HG out!
