***ATTENTION TEXT-ONLY HG SUBSCRIBERS (this means YOU!): Since only
a tiny fraction of our audience receives our emails in text-only form, and the
emails look so much better designed in HTML, we have decided to stop
sending out the text-only versions of Hungry Girl newsletters. This change
will happen in the very near future. Keep an eye out for the HTML versions in
your inbox... coming soon!***

This is the text version of Hungry Girl.

Hungry Girl Today: 8.24.09

Spotted on Shelves...

Kozy Shack Simplywell Pudding - This pudding is thick and full of fiber,
calcium, and antioxidants. The French Vanilla is DELICIOUS, and the Dark
Chocolate is good as well. As for the other three more "experimental"
flavors: Lemon Ginger, Green Tea Chai, and Pear Mangosteen? Um, not so
great. The Pear Mangosteen is acceptable, but we are NOT on board with the
other two. We still love you, Kozy Shack! Each 4-oz. pudding cup has 100
calories, 1 - 1.5g fat, 17 - 18g carbs, 3g fiber, and 3 - 4g protein (POINTS®
value 1 - 2*).

Coffee-mate Powder Stick Packs - These new single-serving packets of
powdered creamer are GREAT to stash in your purse or desk, especially
since you never know when you'll be faced with low-quality plain coffee. One
little stick and you're saved. Choose between The Original (15 calories, 1g
fat, 1g carbs, and a POINTS® value of 0* per packet) and French Vanilla (60
calories, 2.5g fat, 9g carbs, and a POINTS® value of 1* per packet). We'll
likely be sticking (get it!?) with The Original until they start offering these in
Sugar Free French Vanilla!

Biotta Premium Organic Juices - Hey, veggie-drinkers and fruit-sippers!
Looking for an alternative to V8? Check out these adorable (and recyclable)
bottles of veggie and fruit juice cocktails from Biotta. They contain more
nutrients than most commercial juices. YAY! Our new favorite, the Vegetable
Juice Cocktail, has only 60 calories, 0g fat, 13g carbs, 2g fiber, and 2g
protein (POINTS® value 1*) per 8.4-oz. bottle. There are some crazy
varieties like Elderberry, Potato, and Sauerkraut, but those are a little TOO
adventurous, even for us! Click here to find a few bottles near you or here to
order online.

Bitty Bites!

Really, Wal-Mart? REALLY?

In what some consider a moustache-twirlingly diabolical move, Wal-Mart has
decided to throw some competition in the direction of an American institution:
The Girl Scouts. One mom/blogger feels Wal-Mart stooped pretty low when it
unveiled knockoffs of the Scouts' top-selling cookies, Thin Mints and
Tagalongs. But according to another bloggerWal-Mart claims its versions are
just "an alternative to the many fudge mint cookies and chocolate covered
peanut butter cookies," pointing out that Kellogg's Keebler Fudge Shoppe
Grasshoppers and Peanut Butter Filled Cookies are pretty similar to the
Scouts' snacks too. A valid point. Apparently Wal-Mart also "supports the Girl
Scouts . . . through cookie sales in front of [its] stores, local fundraising
efforts, and donations." Hmmm. We're personally willing to pay a few extra
bucks for the real thing if it means funding campouts and good wholesome
fun for the little Hungry Girls out there. And the real Girl Scout Cookies rock
so much, even we indulge in a few each year!

Jeffrey's Back and Smuglier Than Ever!

We recently learned that The Next Food Network Star runner-up (and HG
fave) Jeffrey Saad now has a series of webisodes based on his TV pilot, The
Spice Smuggler. Yay! While you're over at the FN site, check out Jeffrey's
tasty-looking recipes, conveniently posted for all to see. Sure, everyone's
happy for NFNS winner Melissa d'Arabian and her new show, Ten Dollar
Dinners, but the people demand more Jeffrey. Congrats to both of them!

Bon Appe-Tweet!

What's Tony winner and TV host Marissa Jaret Winokur's new weight-
management mantra? "Before I eat, I shall tweet." In her blog on
People.com, she raves that her Twitter pals are like a support group in her
quest to shed some pounds. It's already helped to change her latte-loving
ways, and we think it's a pretty savvy idea. (Having to type, "I'm going to sit
down and chow an entire bag of potato chips," can do a number on the
appetite.) Read all about it, including her battles with hotel mini-bars. Then

Just HOW Bad Is That Fast-Food Lunch?

Um, it's pretty bad, people. Researchers from the New York City Department
of Health and Mental Hygiene surveyed nearly 8,000 customers from fast-
food joints around NYC to see what they ordered. Turns out, the average
lunch ordered at chicken chains contained around 931 calories -- the worst of
any fast-food category. The lowest lunch average came from sandwich shops
(734 calories). Horrifyingly enough, 34 percent of all the fast-food eaters
surveyed ordered meals averaging 1,000 calories or more... and that's just
for lunch! Eeeks. Consider yourself warned...

The Buzz...

Looking for another way to enjoy guilt-free hot chocolate? Hot Cocoa is the
next limited edition flavor to join the ever-expanding Dreyer's/Edy's Slow
Churned Light Ice Cream line. It has marshmallows and everything, humans.
It'll hit the freezer aisle in October. We can't wait! ***More good news for
chocolate-lovers. A long-term study has found that heart attack survivors
who ate chocolate two or more times a week cut their risk of heart-disease-
related death THREEFOLD compared to chocolate-avoiders. Pass it on!
***Pssst... Licorice oil may help burn fat. Don't start inhaling Twizzlers just
yet, though. Click here for more. ***A new study suggests that eating out
with a large group of female pals may cause you to consume more calories.
To be safe, start talking about HG and all the great stuff you've read in
recent emails before ordering. (Just a little tip!) The study also found that
none of the variables -- like group size or gender of the other diners --
affected what the men ordered. (Sheesh!) But overall, the women still
consumed fewer calories per meal than the men did. (Score!) That's all
we've got. HG out!
