***ATTENTION TEXT-ONLY HG SUBSCRIBERS (this means YOU!): Since only
a tiny fraction of our audience receives our emails in text-only form, and the
emails look so much better designed in HTML, we have decided to stop
sending out the text-only versions of Hungry Girl newsletters. This change
will happen in the very near future. Keep an eye out for the HTML versions in
your inbox... coming soon!***
This is the text version of Hungry Girl.

Spotted on Shelves...
Stella D'oro Breakfast Treats 100 Calorie Packs - These sweet cookie/pastry
snacks have been around forever, and the 100-cal packs of them have
existed for a couple of years. But only recently have the single-serving
versions started popping up on shelves nationally. We spied them in CA for
the first time ever, just last week. In Original (vanilla), Chocolate, or
Cinnamon, each pouch has 100 calories, 2g fat, 18 - 19g carbs, 1g fiber, and
2g protein (POINTS® value 2*). Find these ASAP, people. THEY ARE
AWESOME... any time of day or night. We promise.
Louis Kemp Crab Snack Delights - Oooooh, Louis, you clever thing, you. You
took your delicious, protein-packed "crab" (we use quotes because there's
little to no actual crab in the product) and turned it into snack-sized,
individually wrapped sticks. WE LOVE THIS!!! Each 1.5-oz. stick has 35
calories, no fat, 5g carbs, 0g fiber, and 4g protein (POINTS® value 1*).
Progresso High Fiber Soups - They're heeeeere! These tasty soups have 28%
the DV of fiber in each serving... that means every can contains more than
half the fiber you need in a day! There's Chicken Tuscany, Creamy Tomato
Basil, Hearty Vegetable and Noodles, and Homestyle Minestrone. A 1-cup
serving has 90 - 130 calories, 1.5 - 4g fat, 18 - 26g carbs, 7g fiber, and 3 -
8g protein (POINTS® value 1 - 2*). Mmmmm!
Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures...
So, you know NYC requires most chain restaurants to post calorie counts,
right? Well apparently, Houston's (a fairly high-end restaurant chain with
delicious food) is trying DESPERATELY to avoid complying with this law.
Regarding its NYC locations, the chain has pointed out subtle differences in
the menus, tinkered with the restaurant names, and been pretty sneaky in
general to find loopholes in the law. Annoying? Sure! But think about it.
Houston's probably feels it's unfair that the law doesn't apply to ALL
restaurants in the area, just ones with 15+ locations nationwide. So potential
restaurant-goers could see high calorie counts flashed in their faces at
Houston's and opt to eat at competing restaurants (which may serve foods
that are even MORE fattening) that AREN'T required to post calorie counts.
This leads us to our latest POP-UP poll. (We call it that because it just POPS
UP out of nowhere!) Do YOU think Houston's is being shifty and devious or
just doing what's best for the company? Click here to weigh in on the whole
calorie-posting thing...
Bitty Bites...
Recall Alert: Frozen Pizzas and Diet Mascots
Heads up! If you have a Kraft-produced frozen pizza in your freezer, it may
be part of a recent recall. There's no threat of contaminated ingredients or
dangerous objects enclosed, it's just that the company inadvertently left a
soy-based ingredient off of the ingredients list. No injuries or illnesses have
been reported, but the soy protein concentrate used in the pizzas could
cause a reaction in someone with soy allergies. Click HERE for all the info.
And sadly, one of the diet world's most beloved mascots (okay, one of the
diet world's only mascots) has been called back. Weight Watchers has
recalled its plush orange "Hungry" figures and magnets, after incidents of
sewing needles found inside the products were reported. Click here for the
need-to-know info on that.
Is Your Coffee Break Wreaking Havoc on Your Diet?
Have you noticed a correlation between your daily trips to the coffee shop
and the tightness of your jeans? It's not a coincidence. Click here to see how
many calories are in the things you're sipping and chewing and what you
need to do to burn those calories off. Sure, you may already be familiar with
some of these shocking stats, but there's something about seeing it all in
chart-form that really drives the point home...
Does Junk Food Make You Dumb?
Hmmm... We've always known that people who constantly eat fatty foods
aren't making the smartest CHOICES ever, but is the food itself actually
making them less intelligent? A new study out of Oxford University has found
that a diet of burgers, fries, and other high-fat foods may cause you to
become less mentally alert, damage your short-term memory, and weaken
your physical endurance. This is exactly what happened to rats that were
feasting on high-fat diets, and they exhibited these changes in as little as
nine days. Whether or not it has the same effect on humans is TBD.
The Buzz...
Love SweetRiot, the do-gooder brand of all-natural dark chocolate snacks?
Here's some AWESOME news. Order the delicious cacao treats between now
and this Friday (9/4/09), and get 40% off your order with promo code:
HGRiot. That's HUGE! ***Speaking of huge, a 1,224-lb. triple vanilla cupcake
with pink frosting was unveiled recently in Royal Oak, MI. Needless to say, it
broke the record for world's largest cupcake -- it was over eight times larger
in size than the previous record-holder! In case you're wondering, by our
calculations, that thing had a POINTS® value of around 48,332*. ***Wanna
know what the biggest health problem of the 21st century is here in America?
According to exercise scientist Steven Blair, PED, who recently spoke at the
American Psychological Association's 117th Annual Convention, it's the fact
that we are leading sedentary lives. Sitting on your butt all day can set off
major health problems, so MOVE around, people! Walk! Jump! Skip! Prance!
Just do it... ***Did you know that HG is CLOSER than EVER to reaching
