Hungry Girl Today: 9.24.09
Sure, we like to stick to basics and staples when we hit the market, but these
ten finds are quickly becoming new favorites at the HG HQ. Maybe they'll find
their way into YOUR kitchen, too...
1. Yoplait Fiber One Yogurt
PER SERVING (1 container): 50 calories, 0g fat, 55mg sodium, 13g carbs, 5g
fiber, 4g sugars, 3g protein -- POINTS® value 0*
It would be easy to assume that we love this yogurt JUST because it's
emblazoned with the HG logo, but NO! It's the other way around. We tasted
the latest version of this yogurt before it hit shelves and loved it SO much,
we gave it our stamp of approval -- especially since they squeezed a few
extra calories out of the mix (and some real fruit pieces INTO the mix). How
did they do it!?
2. La Tortilla Factory Smart & Delicious 100 Calorie Tortillas, 100% Whole
Wheat
PER SERVING (1 tortilla): 100 calories, 1.5g fat, 320mg sodium, 24g carbs,
8g fiber, 3g sugars, 5g protein -- POINTS® value 1*
These brand-new tortillas from La Tortilla Factory are easy to fall for. They're
tasty, low in calories and fat, high in fiber, and LARGE. Seriously. We
measured them in the HG kitchen, and they're about 2 inches bigger in
diameter than our beloved Low Carb High Fiber tortillas made by the same
company. For big, veggie 'n protein packed wraps, these things ROCK... and
give you a little more room to work with. They're starting to appear in stores
this month, so look out for 'em!
3. Progresso Light Soups (NEW Varieties!) and High Fiber Soups
PER SERVING (1 cup): 60 - 130 calories, 0 - 4g fat, 460 - 700mg sodium, 10 -
26g carbs, 2 - 7g fiber, 1 - 13g sugars, 2 - 8g protein -- POINTS® value 0 -
2*
When you need a mini meal or a snack any time of day, we say, "Why not
soup?" Progresso's line of Light soups is an all-around favorite of ours, and
now there are brand-new varieties, like Chicken & Dumpling and Italian Style
Meatball. But wait! There's more. Progresso ALSO just launched its new line
of High Fiber soups, which are low in the fattening stuff and have a good
dose of fiber in each cup (7 grams!). Try the Chicken Tuscany, Creamy
Tomato Basil, Hearty Vegetable and Noodles, and Homestyle Minestrone.
MMMM!
4. Frank's RedHot Sweet Heat BBQ Wings Sauce
PER SERVING (1 tbsp.): 20 calories, 0g fat, 310mg sodium, 5g carbs, 0g
fiber, 4g sugars, 0g protein -- POINTS® value 0*
This isn't your average barbeque sauce, people. This is a delicious, flavor-
packed fusion of hot sauce and sweet BBQ goodness. But don't feel like this
stuff needs to be limited to wings. Kick up your lean chicken breasts, salmon
fillets, and turkey wraps with it, use it as a salad dressing... whatever! Find
yourself a bottle and hold on tight. Weeeee!
5. Contessa Green Cuisine Stir-Fry Meals
PER SERVING (1 1/2 - 2 cups without sauce): 120 - 150 calories, 1.5 - 3g fat,
210 - 270mg sodium, 11 - 14g carbs, 3 - 4g fiber, 3 - 5g sugars, 13 - 17g
protein -- POINTS® value 2*
These are some of the smartest skillet meals around. Why? Well, not only
are they free of any noodles, rice, and other starchy items, but the sauce
comes in a packet on the side. Customizable meals in a bag? Genius! If you
use all the sauce (and there's a LOT of it!), it'll add around 60 - 80 fat-free
calories to each serving (bringing the total POINTS® value per serving to 3 -
4*). Go for the shrimp, chicken, or beef variety, and dinner will be on the
table (sauced or not) in minutes.
6. Pillsbury Crescent Recipe Creations Seamless Dough Sheet
PER SERVING (1/6 package): 120 calories, 6g fat, 300mg sodium, 16g carbs,
<1g fiber, 3g sugars, 2g protein -- POINTS® value 3*
HELLO! If you're not on board with this seamless dough yet, still furiously
rolling out the perforations in Reduced Fat Crescent Roll dough, give it a rest.
This dough is the SAME as the old triangle-cut formula, except in one solid
sheet. It makes whipping up recipes like our Crazy-Delicious Cheesy Cherry
Danish SUPER-EASY. We'd like to thank the Pillsbury Doughboy for listening
to our requests. PD + HG 4-ever!
7. Diet V8 Splash
PER SERVING (8 oz.): 10 calories, 0g fat, 35 - 40mg sodium, 3g carbs, 0g
fiber, 2g sugars, 0g protein -- POINTS® value 0*
Our latest juicy obsession. We're partial to the Tropical Blend (its mango-y,
pineappley flavor ROCKS), but the Berry Blend is pretty good, too. We like
this beverage blended up with fruit for a smoothie, mixed in with our FRS, or
even just sipped straight. It's a new staple in our fridge and should be in
yours, too. (Pssst! The V8 V-Fusion Light is great, too, but we have a hard
time finding it.)
8. Kashi Frozen Entrees, Mayan Harvest Bake and Tuscan Veggie Bake
PER SERVING (1 entree): 260 - 340 calories, 9g fat, 380 - 700mg sodium,
42 - 58g carbs, 8g fiber, 8 - 19g sugars, 7 - 9g protein -- POINTS® value 5 -
7*
We sing the praises of Kashi a lot, but these meals are really fantastic. The
Mayan Harvest Bake (a.k.a. the best frozen entree ever) has crazy stuff like
plantains and polenta, smothered in an amazingly delicious sauce. The
Tuscan Veggie Bake is like a super-fancy veggie lasagna of squash,
eggplant, and sweet potato with 7-grain noodles. Interesting, wholesome
COMFORT FOOD... Who knew?! P.S. Kashi, we've totally noticed your
website's makeover... and we like it!
9. Nescafe Taster's Choice Vanilla
PER SERVING (1 tsp.): 5 calories, 0g fat, 0mg sodium, 1g carbs, 0g fiber, 0g
sugars, 0g protein -- POINTS® value 0*
We want to erase the stigma around instant coffee -- that it tastes bad or just
isn't cool to drink. Instant coffee is GREAT for iced java drinks, people! (It's
also good for hot coffee, in a pinch, but we use it more for the cold stuff.)
This powder is lightly flavored, slightly sweet, and extremely tasty. It has
kind of a vanilla-coconut-ish thing going on, and we're pretty into it. Don't
fear the instant coffee! P.S. It comes in canisters and single-serving packets.
10. Gorton's Signature Grilled and Classic Grilled Fillets
PER SERVING (1 fillet): 80 - 100 calories, 2.5 - 3g fat, 250 - 270mg sodium,
<1 - 2g carbs, 0g fiber, 0 - 1g sugars, 14 - 17g protein -- POINTS® value 2*
As protein fiends, we're always looking for a quick and easy fish fix... and
one that doesn't come with an oily, crunchy coating. Gorton's has a line of
terrific 100-calorie-or-less, cook-from-frozen fish fillets that fit the bill all the
way. Try out one of the Classic Grilled Fillets (flaky white fish), Classic Grilled
Salmon, or Signature Grilled Tilapia as part of a simple yet awesome meal.
(FYI, Gorton's also makes a TON of flavored versions with similar stats.)
