Hungry Girl Today: 10.9.09

Today we're celebrating some of our favorite things to put in a sandwich, on

a sandwich, and outside of a sandwich. Read on and get ready to chew

things...

STEP 1: THE BREAD ITEM

Arnold/Brownberry/Oroweat Sandwich Thins

PER SERVING (1 roll): 100 calories, 1g fat, 210 - 230mg sodium, 21 - 23g

carbs, 5g fiber, 2g sugars, 4 - 5g protein -- POINTS® value 1*

We couldn't possibly dedicate an email to sandwiches without giving these

flat rolls some love. In 100% Whole Wheat, Multi-Grain, Whole Grain White,

the new Honey Wheat (currently in limited distribution), and Seedless Rye,

these things are the BEST. We love them for hearty sandwiches like our Ring-

My-Bella Mushroom Sandwich. Can't find these slim Thins? Seek out their

twins -- Pepperidge Farm Deli Flats.

Sara Lee 45 Calories & Delightful Bread

PER SERVING (2 slices): 90 calories, 1g fat, 200 - 240mg sodium, 18g carbs,

4 - 5g fiber, <1 - 2g sugars, 5 - 6g protein -- POINTS® value 1*

Basic bread, but done light and right. With varieties like classic White and

100% Multi-Grain, it's fluffy, flavorful, and fantastic. Load it up with the fixins

for a Guilt-Free 1-2-3 BLT!

STEP 2: THE MAIN EVENT

Hillshire Farm Deli Select Ultra Thin Slices

PER SERVING (2 oz., 5 slices): 50 - 70 calories, 0.5 - 3g fat, 550 - 700mg

sodium, <1 - 4g carbs, 0 - <1g fiber, 0 - 3g sugars, 9 - 11g protein --

POINTS® value 1 - 2*

Very lean and very delicious deli meat. Sliced super-thin because sometimes

more pieces = better! And there are SO many varieties to choose from, like

Brown Sugar Baked Ham, Rotisserie Seasoned Chicken Breast, and Cracked

Black Pepper Turkey Breast. YUMMMM! Try 'em in our Toasty Turkey Club or

Blue Ribbon Roast Beef Sandwich! (FYI: The above stats exclude the salami --

that stuff's fat-packed.)

Chicken of the Sea Premium Skinless & Boneless Pink Salmon, 3-Oz. Pouch

PER SERVING (one 3-oz. pouch): 90 calories, 3g fat, 420mg sodium, 0g

carbs, 0g fiber, 0g sugars, 15g protein -- POINTS® value 2*

Skeptics of the whole shelf-stable salmon thing, take note. With the right mix-

ins, the stuff rocks HARD, and this perfectly sized pouched version is much

more user-friendly than its tin-packed counterpart. Stir in some Vivi's

Carnival Mustard for the most unbelievably good salmon salad ever. No

Vivi's? Try fat-free or low-fat mayo and a squirt of lemon juice. Or whip up a

batch of our Salmon Spread the Love. A generous smear of that stuff with

some crunchy veggies would make an AMAZING sandwich!

STEP 3: THE TOPPINGS

Best Foods/Hellmann's Low Fat Mayonnaise Dressing

PER SERVING (1 tbsp.): 15 calories, 1g fat, 130mg sodium, 2g carbs, 0g

fiber, <1g sugars, 0g protein -- POINTS® value 0*

A stepping-stone between fat-free and light mayo. It's good, people, with

totally impressive stats! If you don't love fat-free mayo but still wanna keep

it somewhat guilt-free, give this stuff a whirl. Try it out in any HG recipe that

calls for fat-free mayo.

Baconnaise Lite

PER SERVING (1 tbsp.): 30 calories, 3g fat, 105mg sodium, 1g carbs, 0g

fiber, 0g sugars, 0g protein -- POINTS® value 1*

Don't be afraid... this creamy bacon-flavored condiment is actually REALLY

delicious (especially on turkey sandwiches)! Kosher, safe for vegetarians,

and doesn't taste diet-friendly AT ALL (but it so is). We're standing by

Baconnaise Lite.

Claussen Deli Style Hearty Garlic Sandwich Slices

PER SERVING (about 2 slices): 5 calories, 0g fat, 320mg sodium, 1g carbs,

0g fiber, 1g sugars, 0g protein -- POINTS® value 0*

Need a little more kick in your pickles? Try these slices, infused with garlicky

goodness. You know, if your sandwich can handle it. (Pssst... these pickles

can be found in the fridge section of the supermarket.)

Best Foods/Hellmann's Dijonnaise Mustard

PER SERVING (1 tsp.): 5 calories, 0g fat, 70mg sodium, <1g carbs, 0g fiber,

0g sugars, 0g protein -- POINTS® value 0*

Do we REALLY have to explain why we love this product? Okay, for the

newcomers, here's the gist. You get yummy Dijon flavor with a little

less "bite" than straight mustard. And even though it's fat-free, it's reeeeally

creamy. Try some and be prepared to fall madly in love.

Extra add-ons for your hand-held meal...

Get Fresh! - These items will add crunch and/or flavor to your sandwich...

sliced tomato, red onion rings, lettuce leaves, spinach, sliced avocado (in

moderation), and sliced cucumber.

Grills Just Wanna Have Fun! - Feel a little fancy? Slap some stuff on the grill

(or in the grill pan) for a tasty hot sandwich. Try slabs of bell pepper,

eggplant slices, turkey bacon or center-cut bacon, zucchini slices, portabella

mushroom caps, thick slices of onion -- even throw your bread on the grill

for a bit to get it nice and toasty! Look at you, the guilt-free grill-master!

Spread It On! - Is plain old mayo a bore to you? Take a cue from swanky

sandwich shops and dress it up! Mix in your favorite hot sauces (we heart

Frank's RedHot), some fresh herbs (like basil or cilantro), chopped sun-dried

tomatoes, whatever! Get crazy with your condiments, people!
