***ATTENTION TEXT-ONLY HG SUBSCRIBERS (this means YOU!): Since only
a tiny fraction of our audience receives our emails in text-only form, and the
emails look so much better designed in HTML, we have decided to stop
sending out the text-only versions of Hungry Girl newsletters. This change
will happen in the very near future. Keep an eye out for the HTML versions in
your inbox... coming soon!***
This is the text version of Hungry Girl.

Hungry Girl Today: 4.19.10
Spotted on Shelves...
Weight Watchers Smart Ones Smart Mini Wraps - Hooray for frozen mini
meals! These wraps are like soft-shelled taquitos and come in a couple of
varieties: Chicken Ranchero and Chicken & Mushroom Florentine. Have two
of 'em (one serving) for 220 calories, 5 - 6g fat, 510 - 590mg sodium, 30g
carbs, 7g fiber, 3 - 4g sugars, and 12g protein (POINTS® value 4). Smart,
indeed! BTW, the Double W also has new Mini Cheeseburgers, but each of
those is kinda tiny for its 200-cal price tag. (White Castle's have fewer
calories!)
Dinosaur Bar-B-Que Sensuous Slathering Sauce - Okay, "Sensuous
Slathering Sauce" sounds a tad more tawdry than what this actually is: really
good, really guilt-free BBQ sauce. A 2-tbsp. serving has 28 fat-free calories,
177mg sodium, 7g carbs, and 6g sugars (POINTS® value 1*). It's also all
natural and free of gluten. And since BBQ season's quickly approaching,
now's the time to locate a good sauce for, um, sensuously slathering your
chicken breasts. (Sorry.)
Skinny Water - Here we have a beverage line that's full of fun flavors with
added vitamins and intended benefits. For example, the Orange Cranberry
Tangerine drink has calcium, potassium, and 250 percent of the daily value
of vitamin C, and it's dubbed the "Wake Up" water. All six varieties have
neither sugar NOR calories, but it's hit or miss with the flavors. We like the
Lemonade Passionfruit (a.k.a. Total-V) most. Click here to track down the
slender thirst-quenchers, and let us know what you think.
Are You Ready for a Food Revolution!?
If you haven't yet seen Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution on ABC, here's the
scoop: British celeb-chef Jamie Oliver is sort of playing health-food fairy
godmother to America's most obese population, the residents of Huntington,
WV, by attempting to stop the poor nutrition habits of children in their tracks.
Now, you know we're more into food than politics here at HG. (Priorities,
people!) But when food meets politics and involves a REVOLUTION, we'll
meet you at the picket line. Okay, maybe not, but we're definitely on board
with a show dedicated to changing the way Americans eat. Jamie's main
tactic is reforming what schools are serving up for lunch by healthifying
standard lunchroom recipes -- essentially teaching our kiddies to CHEW THE
RIGHT THING. We LOVE that! And while you may not find us with protest
signs in hand, we're showing our support by signing Jamie's petition to
promote cooking and improve school food. If you want in on the food
revolution, you can do the same by clicking here! While you're on his site,
check out the healthy recipes he came up with for the Huntington school
cafeteria. We LOVE the sound of his cheesy cornbread... But for a recipe that
doesn't feed 480, you may want to make our Cheesy-Good Cornbread
Muffins instead!
Bitter-Sweet Study Findings...
So, do you want the bitter or the sweet news first? Let's get the bitter out of
the way! A new study published in the Journal of the National Cancer
Institute suggests that eating fruits and veggies doesn't reduce the risk of
cancer as much as was previously believed. Sure, we're bummed that our
Fujis and broccoli slaw aren't cancer-combating ninjas, but this doesn't mean
we should go bananas and abandon our apples! Fruits and veggies are
essential to OVERALL health, which happens to play a huge role in cancer
prevention. So keep chompin' on that crudité! On to the sweet news... A
study recently published in the journal Appetite indicates that low-cal
sweeteners don't increase our hunger levels or cause us to eat more,
contrary to past reports. Subjects were given either real sugar, natural sugar
substitutes, or artificial sugar swaps. The subjects who consumed low-calorie
sugar substitutes -- natural or not -- reported hunger levels similar to those
of the subjects who consumed real sugar... yet the former took in fewer
calories. WOOHOO! We may be living, breathing (and eating!) proof of this
finding here at HG -- we're HUNGRY with or without our Splenda!
The Buzz...
Super-unique food-find alert! In Original and Peanut Free varieties, NuttZo
Multi-Nut Butter is packed with TONS of nuts and seeds: flaxseeds, hazelnuts,
and Brazil nuts, to name a few. It's not low in calories or fat (similar to
standard PB), but it IS full of good stuff and tastes AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS.
While the prices aren't exactly slim, the NuttZo folks are offering HGers free
shipping on orders over $25 with coupon code: FreeShip. (Expires 4/26.)
Click here to order. Yay! ***Oh boy, Oberto! The jerky people just launched
a new Steak & Cheese snack line, combining (what else?) meat and cheese!
It comes in bags of bite-sized bits and single-serving sticks, and an ounce of
the stuff has about 80 calories and 3.5g fat. We're intrigued! ***CRAZY
goings-on at Jamba Juice! From buy-one-get-one smoothies to daily specials
to new menu items, it's madness over there. Keep your eyes open in the
next few weeks for a southwestern grilled chicken salad, a ginger-soy grilled
chicken salad, and a couple of pasta side salads. We're curious to see the
stats... and taste the salads, of course! ***We pinched ourselves twice after
hearing about this new product: PRETZEL M&M's!!! We haven't tried 'em yet
but are PSYCHED, 'cuz we love pretzels 'n chocolate... and because they'd be
SO good in our Cocoa Loco Krispymallow Treats! ***Come see Lisa (Hungry
Girl herself) at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books this weekend in
Southern California! She'll be on the Cooking Stage at 11AM on Saturday,
4/24. The event's free and there will be lots of other fun food personalities in
attendance. That's all we've got. HG out!
