***ATTENTION TEXT-ONLY HG SUBSCRIBERS (this means YOU!): Since only
a tiny fraction of our audience receives our emails in text-only form, and the
emails look so much better designed in HTML, we have decided to stop
sending out the text-only versions of Hungry Girl newsletters. This change
will happen in the very near future. Keep an eye out for the HTML versions in
your inbox... coming soon!***

This is the text version of Hungry Girl.

Hungry Girl Today: 4.26.10

Spotted on Shelves...

Hormel Turkey Pepperoni Minis - We love Hormel's standard-sized Turkey
Pepperoni and have been using it in recipes for years. But we frequently find
ourselves chopping it up... and hard-edged pepperoni pieces are simply not
as cute as circles. Enter Hormel's new Minis! We don't have official stats, but
they're likely similar to those of the original size: A serving (about 1 oz.) has
70 calories, 4g fat, 640mg sodium, and 9g protein (POINTS® value 2*). Way
to go, Hormel!

Ortega Whole Grain Corn Taco Kit - Fiber-up your Taco Tuesday! This just-
add-protein kit contains crunchy shells made with whole-grain yellow corn,
plus taco sauce and seasoning. A serving (2 shells with sauce and seasoning)
has 130 calories, 6g fat, 790mg sodium, 23g carbs, 6g fiber, 1g sugars, and
2g protein (POINTS® value 2*). Jazz up some lean ground turkey or soy
crumbles, pile on the veggies, and go to town! BTW, the shells are also sold
separately and have just 80mg sodium each, so feel free to assemble your
own "kit" using low-salt/no-salt condiments.

V8 V-Fusion Light Acai Mixed Berry - We're super-fans of V-Fusion Light, so
we're psyched for this new flavor and can't wait to give it a try. An 8-oz.
serving has 50 fat-free calories, 35mg sodium, 13g carbs, and 10g sugars
(POINTS® value 1*). It joins Peach Mango, Strawberry Banana, and
Pomegranate Blueberry in the Light lineup. Woohoo! Just make sure to get
the one labeled Light, since this flavor's offered in full-calorie V-Fusion as
well.

Pudgy Pets: A Real Problem?!

The term "obesity epidemic" has been thrown around for years. And
unfortunately, it's now being applied to our pets. The Association for Pet
Obesity Prevention (bet you didn't even know that group existed!) monitors
the weight of dogs and cats in America. Sadly, APOP has come to some
upsetting conclusions: According to last year's data, more than 45 percent of
dogs and 58 percent of cats in the U.S. are too heavy; about 9 percent of
dogs and 21 percent of cats are CLINICALLY OBESE. Whoa. We love our
furry kids! Experts say pet treats are enemy number one. Does this mean
that instead of giving them treats with reckless loving abandon, we should be
cutting off their snack supply!?! Well, if we want our animal friends to be
around for a long time, we do need to pay attention to their weight. Check
out APOP's website for loads of info: Find out your pet's caloric needs (the
amount might be WAY less than you think), the 411 on how many calories
are in popular pet food and treats, telltale signs of an overweight pet, and
more.

The Buzz...

It seems like all people can talk about these days is that crazy Double Down
sandwich at KFC. (HG swap coming soon!) Well, get this -- for all the hubbub
it's causing, it's NOT even the worst sandwich out there. Check out this
frighteningly intriguing article, complete with comparison charts, that fills you
in on more fast-food sandwich horrors. One of the worst? Wendy's Triple
Baconator -- nearly two and a half times as awful as the Original Recipe
Double Down. ***Cash-saving copycat alert! Pillsbury's Reduced Fat
Crescent rolls are AWESOME, but if you want a price cut and have an
Albertsons nearby, grab the grocery chain's store-branded version instead.
The stats are nearly identical. Just a friendly neighborhood HG tip for ya.
***We love to pair up foods, so this new Quiznos deal caught our attention:
The Choose 2 menu features ten $5 combos under 500 calories! Guilt-free
options include the Cantina Chicken Sammie, Roadhouse Steak Sammie, Pan
Asian salad, Chicken Noodle soup, and Tomato Basil soup. YUM! ***And
finally, in weirdo science news, a recent study suggests that taking BIGGER
bites of food and chewing them LESS is better for people watching their
weight. (Not so good for people watching their BREATHING, though; um,
choking hazard!) We're not sure about the validity of this one, but it's an
interesting theory. That's all we've got. HG out!
