Hungry Girl Today: 9.22.10

Hi Hungry Girl,

I really like soup and find that I eat less food when I have some before a

meal. I love the idea of making a big batch for the week -- do you have any

recipes that would be good for this type of thing? Thanks!

Nutz 4 Soup

Hi Nutz,

I also enjoy soup and think it's a great way to start a meal. Sometimes I'll

even have two or three servings instead of a meal... That's how much I love

soup! Here's a roundup of some fantastic multi-serving HG soup recipes.

Ready? Here goes...

The Whole Enchilada Chicken Soup - We were inspired to create this recipe

by HG subscriber Pam, who was inspired by the Chicken Enchilada Soup at

Chili's. It's GREAT...

Wowowow! Wonton Soup - Turkey dumplings floating in amazing broth with

pre-shredded veggies. SOOOOOO GOOOOOOD!

Fully Loaded Baked Potato Soup - Potato + bacon + cheese + spoon = super-

decadent awesomeness. There are other ingredients involved, but you get

the point...

Mmm-mmm Minestrone - Frozen veggies and canned beans make this soup

extremely easy to prepare. But the taste puts ready-made minestrones to

shame!

Peachy-Keen Black Bean Soup - There are only THREE ingredients in this

soup... unless you count the cumin. (I don't.) It's packed with flavor, so try

it!

Yumbo Gumbo - Shrimp and crabmeat give this stew lots of protein. Spicy

Hot V8 and Frank's RedHot give it some HEAT!

Cheesy Chili Dog Soup! And check out the Souper Douper chapter of the first

Hungry Girl cookbook and the Crock Around the Clock chapter of Hungry Girl

Hi,

I'm wondering if you can recommend any FILLING snack bars. It seems like

the ones that fill me up have way too many calories to be considered a

snack. And the bars that are very low in calories don't fill me up at all. Is

there a happy medium in the bar world?

Bar Star

Hi Bar Star,

This is a great Q. One reason people can get into trouble with bars is that

they mistake meal replacement bars for snacks. And while there are some

delicious snack bars out there with 100 calories or less, typically those aren't

all that satisfying. When I want a snack bar that'll really fill me up, I look for

ones that have 150 - 200 calories, 4g protein or more, and at least a few

grams of fiber. My favorites are Kind Bars (look for those with the best

stats), Luna Protein Bars, and NutriFit High Energy Bars. I recently tried

ThinkThin Crunch Bars, and those are pretty great too. Others that meet the

criteria? Planters NUT•rition Chewy Nut Bars, Kashi GoLean Crunchy! Bars,

and Kashi TLC Crunchy Granola Bars. Now you're ready to hit the bars (tee

hee!)...
