Hi HG,

I need some more options for low-calorie mixed drinks to order when I'm out. I'm sick of diet cola with vodka. Please help!

Tricia's Thirsty

Hi Tricia,

Good news... There are a lot of smart choices when it comes to happy hour. The trick is to mix 'n match. My personal favorite way to go is to order a shot of fruity vodka mixed with club soda and a splash of juice. There are so many possible combinations -- I love blueberry vodka, club soda, and pineapple juice -- and it's way more fun than a basic vodka-cola drink. Here's some more mix 'n match info!

Liquor: Vodka isn't your only option -- rum and tequila are also good choices. A shot (1 1/2 oz.) of any of those three has about 100 calories. And many of the flavored versions (except for the super-sweet ones) have similar stats. So feel free to try that mandarin-orange vodka, passion-fruit rum, or pomegranate tequila!

Mixers: My go-to base is club soda -- not tonic water. You might think they're the same thing, but tonic actually has as many calories and grams of sugar as regular soda! In addition to club soda, diet lemon-lime soda is a great pick. When it comes to juice, stick with a splash. It will add just enough of a flavor twist without racking up calories. An ounce (2 tbsp.) of pineapple, cranberry, or orange juice will add only about 15 calories.

Bring-Alongs: No shame in stuffing some guilt-free powdered mixes or flavor drops in your bag and then busting 'em out at the table! Sugar-free powdered drink mixes (like the ones from Crystal Light and True Lemon) and calorie-free drops (like MiO) are perfect. Just use the stuff sparingly -- too much will add crazy-intense flavor.

Mix 'n Match Suggestions: For a fruity fix with a touch of tartness, try raspberry vodka with club soda and cranberry juice. Want something tropical? Order coconut rum, club soda, and a splash of pineapple. For a creamsicle-inspired combo, go with vanilla vodka, club soda, and orange juice. Yum. And if you want a spiked Arnold Palmer, get an unsweetened iced tea with a shot of vodka; then add some sugar-free powdered lemonade.

There you have it! Drink responsibly...
