Envy in the Fast-Food World? Copycat Changes Among Chains
Do you ever gaze at your Subway sandwich wishing that you could enjoy it in a more upscale setting? Looks like you're the target demo for the newly announced Subway Café -- a cross between a sandwich shop and a coffeehouse that features a more elaborate menu than standard Subway locations. Cool! The McDonald's people are looking to class up their restaurants in the style of Starbucks, muting the color scheme and adding wooden tables. (Hope they're not also planning to tone down the clown's signature coif.) And not to be outdone, Burger King is test-marketing smoothies, yogurt parfaits, oatmeal, and more. (Sound familiar? Yeah, those are all on the McDonald's menu.) OK... First chain to swap secret sauce for Vivi's Classic Carnival Mustard wins our vote!

The Buzz...

Huge food news! (The food is huge; the news is reasonably sized.) Coming soon to freezer aisles, Weight Watchers Smart Ones Satisfying Selections -- bagged frozen meals with 30 percent more food than standard Smart Ones entrées, with only 300 - 390 calories a pop. They sound great and we can't wait to taste them, but the packaging does remind us of another product. (Lean Cuisine Market Creations, anyone?) ***Speaking of frozen finds, the fro-yo gurus at Pinkberry are at it again -- their newest seasonal flavor is... Salted Caramel! WOW. As far as fruity add-ins go, we're betting banana and pineapple would be great with the caramel-icious stuff! ***Here's some interesting info: Research out of Australia suggests that onions, green tea, and olive leaf extract could help fight obesity. In lab tests, these foods helped to prevent inflammatory cells from growing in the abdominal "fat pads." This is good news... even if we have no idea where to get olive leaf extract. ***Want to help others and hydrate yourself at the same time? For every bottle of Activate (the low-cal drink with vitamins in the cap) sold through July 31st, the company will donate a day's worth of nutrition to a pregnant mother in need. It's all part of the beverage brand's "Buy One, Feed Two" campaign, in partnership with Nourish America. How great is that? That's all we've got. HG out!
