Think Eating Smarter Costs More? Guess Again!

There's no shortage of excuses for why we don't eat better. And according to a recent poll by ShopSmart magazine, the most popular reason women give for not eating healthful food is that it costs too much. Well, good news: Nutritious foods may actually be cheaper than their junky counterparts! A new study by the US Department of Agriculture breaks it down like this: If you're looking at price per calorie, sure, many high-calorie junk foods are cheaper than wholesome stuff like low-calorie fruits and veggies. But if you consider the price per average portion size, then grains, veggies, fruit, and dairy give you the most bang for your buck. The study took into consideration the cost of more than 4,000 different foods to reach these conclusions... Talk about food for thought! Want some specific cash-saving tips? The Buzz...

Just last week, Mayor Bloomberg of NYC proposed a ban on selling sugary soft drinks larger than 16 oz. at restaurants, movie theaters, sports arenas, and similar locations. The ban would not apply to drinks with fewer than 25 calories per 8-oz. serving, alcoholic drinks, fruit juices, or dairy-based beverages. (Refills and ordering additional drinks would still be okay.) So large Cokes are off-limits but fishbowl-sized margaritas and milkshakes are okay? Will the number of sugar packets one can add to iced tea be restricted? Hmmmm... ***Ever wish scientists would use their super smarts to solve your everyday problems? Wish granted -- researchers at MIT have created a nonstick ketchup bottle, coating the bottle with a food-safe substance that will allow your condiment to glide onto your burger with ease. Hooray for science! ***Listen up, commuters. As if the traffic isn't lousy enough, new research shows that a long commute is associated with a higher BMI and waist circumference, among other health issues. Bummer news, but knowledge is power -- take action to offset this trend. Try getting in a little exercise on your lunch break, and check out this roundup of better-for-you commuter snacks! ***Speaking of better-for-you snacks, here's another great reason to chomp on fresh fruit... According to data from the Nurses' Health Study, women over 70 who consumed two or more servings of blueberries and strawberries per week over the past several decades showed reduced memory decline. So the next time you feel forgetful, remember to add berries to your market list. And that's all we've got. HG out!
