Almond Joyful News: Fewer Calories, Quicker Cholesterol Benefits, and Wonderful New Snacks!

There have always been plenty of reasons to be nuts about almonds (the fiber, the protein, the energy-boosting advantage, etc.), and now a few new ones are popping up. For instance, recent research suggests that almonds may actually have fewer calories than we thought -- a new method of measurement found that the number might be closer to 130 calories per ounce, rather than 170. AMAZING! Next, our nutty buddy has been linked to speedier cholesterol improvements. A study found that almond consumption as part of a low-calorie diet helped overweight and obese individuals improve their cholesterol levels in less time than those on a low-cal diet without nuts. So eat those almonds (in moderation, of course)! And because we can never have enough options, here's some good news: The peeps behind Wonderful Pistachios have branched out and are now bringing us Wonderful Almonds. Wanna Lose Weight? Give These Study-Backed Methods a Try...

Keep a food journal, don't skip meals, and eat at home. That's the gist of a new yearlong study of weight change among overweight and obese postmenopausal women. Compared with others, those who journaled lost about 6 more pounds, the women who skipped meals lost 8 fewer pounds, and those who ate lunch at a restaurant at least once a week lost an average of 5 fewer pounds. Cut it up! Your food, that is. In a recent study among college students, researchers gave each participant a bagel with cream cheese; one group received whole bagels while another group got bagels that had been cut into quarters. Twenty minutes later, both groups were offered a free meal. The students who were given the cut-up bagels not only ate less of the bagel, but they also ate less of the meal afterward. Eat dessert with breakfast. Here's the logic behind this concept: Feed your cravings early, and you're less likely to go overboard later. A comparison between two groups of dieters showed that while everyone lost an average of 33 pounds in four months, the no-morning-dessert participants (who also consumed a lower-carb diet) regained an average of 22 pounds in the four months that followed. The dessert-with-breakfast subjects (who were on a higher-protein diet) went on to lose another 15 pounds. Very interesting! Arctic Apples have been genetically engineered to maintain a more attractive appearance, and the company behind them hopes they'll boost overall apple consumption. Crazy! ***More technological fun... Check out this iPhone app with a feature called Gymcodes -- it's basically a virtual personal trainer that demystifies fancy workout equipment. Simply scan the code on devices displaying Gymcodes stickers, and the app will inform you of the best way to use the equipment. We want these stickers on the adjustable dual-pulley machines at our gym... ***If you're making an effort to get more fruits and veggies into your daily life, you're not alone. Most Americans are trying to eat more produce, but findings from the NPD Group reportedly show that most of us are still eating less than half of the government recommendation for fruits and vegetables.
