Coffee Talk: Health Benefits, Weight Loss, and a Chance to Win DD for a Year!

By now, you may have heard rumblings that coffee can do more than just help you to shake off that morning fog. Well, here's the latest... A massive study of more than 400,000 men and women found that coffee drinkers were at a lower risk of death from a range of causes, including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Another study revealed that daily consumption of coffee could reduce your risk of getting basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer. The effect is credited to the caffeine; the benefits were not found with decaf coffee. Thirsty for more java news? Green (a.k.a. unroasted) coffee beans could be the next trend in weight loss. At a recent meeting of the American Chemical Society, the following study findings were presented: Overweight and obese subjects who consumed the ground coffee beans in capsule form (in addition to exercising and eating a healthful diet) lost a substantial amount of weight and body fat. (This was a small study, but the results are intriguing nonetheless!) Enough science... How does FREE Dunkin' Donuts coffee sound? Upload a photo of yourself with a mug of coffee to the DunkinAtHome website, and you'll be entered to win great prizes, including a YEAR'S SUPPLY of delicious Dunkin' Donuts coffee! (Ends 8/26/12.) Cheers!

We Need to Talk About Chips.
We Need to Talk About Chips.
Chip Chip Hooray! (BREAKOUT Snack Finds!)

BIG NEWS! (Are you sitting down? Have you eaten? We don't want you fainting.) Popchips, one of our very favorite crunchy snacks EVER, has a line of TORTILLA CHIPS hitting the market! We've tried 'em, and they're FANTASTIC! The flavors are Ranch (ahhh... so good!), Salsa (fantastic!), Chili Limón (EXTREME yum), and Nacho Cheese (AMAZING!). Look for them in stores, or click here to order. While we're on the subject of the latest chip sensations, there are a few more newcomers we need to discuss. Simply 7 already blew our minds with its lentil and hummus chip lines, and the company's newest flavors are even more mind-blowing... Jalapeño Lentil Chips and Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Chips! Each 1-oz. serving (about 30 - 31 chips) has 130 calories, 5g fat, 300 - 420mg sodium, 18 - 19g carbs, <1 - 1g fiber, 2g sugars, and 2 - 3g protein (PointsPlus® value 3 - 4*). Time for crunchies...

The Buzz...

We're having serious East Coast envy right about now... Chobani has opened a Greek yogurt bar in New York City! We hear you can snag the creamy yogurt (0% or 2%) with one of nine different topping combos. Fun, fun, fun! We can't wait to visit it on the next HG book tour. (Dates coming soon!) ***Good news for parents... The latest school-cafeteria federal guidelines are officially in place, requiring more whole grains, fresh fruit, and vegetables, as well as less sodium and fewer calories. Let's hear it for brain food! ***Calling all Xbox fanatics: Check out the free-to-download Kinect PlayFit! It counts the calories you burn while playing certain games using Kinect. Who's up for a calorie-torching round of Dance Central 2? ***If you swear by the five-second rule -- you know, the one that says you can eat fallen food if you grab it in under five seconds -- this might spark your interest: Certain foods are more likely to remain safe for consumption than others. After testing the amount of bacterial growth on various foods after floor exposure, one study found that foods high in sugar and salt were the least likely to pick up bacteria. Also interesting? The unofficial rule is apparently three seconds (not five) in the UK. ***Have YOU been watching the Hungry Girl TV show? Episodes of Hungry Girl air every Wednesday at 10:30am/9:30c on Food Network and every Saturday at 10:30am ET/7:30am PT on Cooking Channel! So tune in or set your DVR for all the guilt-free fun you can handle (and then some). And that's all we've got. HG out!
