Guac That ROCKS!
Guac That ROCKS!
Spotted on Shelves...

Quaker Tortillaz, Zesty Guacamole Flavor - Love guac? And triangular snacks? These brand-new rice 'n corn crisps are light, crispy, and uniquely delicious. A 1-oz. serving (about 15 crisps) has 130 calories, 4g fat, 21g carbs, 1g fiber, and 2g protein (POINTS® value 3*). Also available in Cheesy Nacho. Watch out, Doritos!

100 Calorie Packs Honey Maid Cinnamon Roll Thin Crisps - If you love cinnamon buns, this super-new 100-calorie pack will make you happy. With 3g fat, 16g carbs, 0g fiber, and 1g protein, each package has a POINTS® value of 2*. They're sooo good (and very cute, too, in case that's something that matters to you).

Pillsbury Pizza Crust, Classic - Here's a hidden gem. There's lots you can do with this refrigerated dough (recipes coming soon!), 'cuz a little goes a long way. 1/6th of the package has 160 calories, 2g fat, 31g carbs, 1g fiber, and 5g protein (POINTS® value 3*). But it's easy to stretch the servings (literally, stretch and roll the dough thin) and make the nutritional stats WAY better. BTW, don't confuse this with the Thin Crust variety -- that one, oddly, has more fat. Just a little tip!
Better Off Bread

There are a bunch of new bread products (and some breaking bread news!) that people have been yapping about lately, so we thought we'd tell you about 'em (because we like you, and we're nice):

New from Fiber One - If you're lucky enough to find these, TRY THEM. Both of the new breads -- Country White and Soft Oatmeal -- are fantastic. But the REAL standouts are the new varieties of F1's english muffins -- in Original and 100% Whole Wheat. (Sorta funny that one of the new flavors is called Original, no?) Our advice? If you eat the bread, stick with one piece -- each large slice has 100 - 110 calories, 1 - 1.5g fat, 24 - 25g carbs, 6g fiber, and 4g protein (POINTS® value 1 - 2*). The e-muffins are a STEAL at 100 calories, 1g fat, 22 - 23g carbs, 6g fiber, and 5g protein (POINTS® value 1*) per muffin.

Subway's Latest - There's a new bread at Subway -- 9-Grain Wheat -- with a nice amount of fiber (4g per 6-incher) and less fat and fewer calories than the Honey Oat (the only other bread with more fiber). Yup, we pay attention to all the little details. Each 6-inch, 9-Grain roll has 200 calories, 2.5g fat, 40g carbs, and 8g protein (POINTS® value 3*).

Bread Wars! - You may have seen Domino's recent ads boasting how its new sandwiches beat Subway's 2-to-1 in a national taste test. Well, the folks at Subway weren't happy -- their lawyers sent the pizza co. a cease-and-desist letter demanding Domino's pull these ads. Domino's not only refused to do so, but they also launched a commercial showing their CEO burning (baking, actually) the letter! Click here to watch it.
Stuff You Didn't Know You Needed...

Foodie Sneaks - If you're the type that would rather WEAR cupcakes than eat them, check out this too-cute, customizable footwear from Keds. Soooo many edibles on soooooo many sneakers. Also available in sushi, gumballs, and more!

Happy Spoons - Why are these spoons so happy? Maybe it's because they're fun AND functional! Smiley slotted spoons make cooking (and serving) a more joyous occasion for everyone. Pssst... Use two as salad-servers. ADORABLE!

Mobile Foodie Survival Kit - Be daring. Be bold. Spice things up! Here are more than a dozen organic spices plus a few other goodies that travel with you wherever you go, helping to transform bland foods into exciting adventures. Weeeeeee!
The Buzz...

This is exciting, people! Lisa (a.k.a. HG) will be a special guest this Thursday (1/29/09) on Bobby Flay Radio! Tune in to Sirius XM Stars Too (channel 108) at 10am ET to hear Lisa chat it up with the lovable celebrity chef/restauranteur/grillmaster himself. And if you don't have Sirius Satellite Radio, we've heard you can get a free 3-day trial to check it out! (Just wait a day or two to sign up so it doesn't expire before Thursday.) ***After too many decades to count, Heinz has decided to ditch the small pickle from its ketchup labels and replace it with a pic of a tomato. As the CEO of the ketchup company diplomatically put it, "With all due respect to the pickle, which has served Heinz dutifully since the 19th century, we are shifting the spotlight to the tomato." It's about time and, frankly, we're shocked it took this long. ***Chili's Alert! New Guiltless Grill items have arrived -- keep an eye out for Guiltless Carne Asada Steak, Guiltless Honey-Mustard Glazed Salmon, Guiltless Cedar Plank Tilapia, and a Guiltless Buffalo Chicken Sandwich (on a whole-wheat bun). Mmmmmm! BTW, those each have around 200 - 400 calories and most have 10g fat or less. (The salmon has 20g fat.) Availability varies by location, but click here for a peek at the menu! ***Good news, coffee-lovers! This Wednesday (1/28/09), Panera Bread is giving out free cups of its new light and dark roast coffees, as well as offering free samples of its new breakfast sandwiches and new parfait. (We checked out the stats on the new food items, and while we won't turn down the free samples, we don't think we'll be ordering them any time soon.) That's all we've got. HG out!
