The Wonderful World of Fiber
Fiber: Still a Mystery?

While the high fiber trend continues to grow, it appears (at least according to a recent study conducted by the National Fiber Council), that Americans are still confused about what fiber does for us.  For starters, there is a shocking misconception that it improves bone strength, which it doesn't.  It DOES, however, aid in the prevention of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and obesity.  That same study asked people to choose which celebrity most "looks" like they achieve good health through a high-fiber diet.  An odd question perhaps, but the hands down winner (with a whopping 34% of the votes) was Oprah.

Breakfast & Milk Make a Comeback

Maybe your mom was onto something after all when she insisted that you drink your milk and eat breakfast.  Some recent studies have indicated that starting your day with breakfast and dairy can help you acheive a healthy weight.  Dietician and author Elizabeth Somer (10 Habits That Mess Up a Woman's Diet) and actress Molly Ringwald have teamed up with the National Milk Moustache Campaign to promote the weight loss benefits of milk and breakfast.  The new got milk? breakfast club (get it? Molly Ringwald? Breakfast Club?!) is a free online community that provides tips, tools and solutions for acheiving a healthy weight.  Check it out at

The Buzz...

The CSPI is at it again.  This time the "nutrition nannies" are after Frito-Lay, insisting that the chip manufacturers need to put warnings back on the bags of their "Light" line of snacks that contain Olestra, the fat substitute famous for causing stomach cramps.  Frito-Lay says the warnings are not needed.  More on this soon.  **A new study suggests that Americans are aware of what they should be eating but find it difficult to stick to a healthy diet because of all the foods and products that are readily available to them.  Unfortunately, most of the time people just focus on taste and convenience over health. ***Speaking of healthier food, T.G.I. Fridays has added some "Guilt-Free Choices" to their menu.  Choose carefully, though, as some of their "low carb" options are very high in fat and calories.  That's all we've got.  HG out!
