Too hungry to wait until your entree comes to chow down?  Appetizers can make or break a meal.  Check it out...


Order a broth-based soup.  It's a better choice than most other appetizers. One to try: Applebee's Onion Soup au Gratin (from their Weight Watcher's menu).  It has just 150 calories and 8 grams of fat,  and it's topped with tons of reduced fat cheese.  By the way, studies show that people who consume  broth-based soup before a meal, end up taking in about 100 fewer calories than those who don't.  Soup-er!


Not all appetizers are a dieter's nightmare. P.F. Chang's, though famous for fatty, greasy dishes, offers Vegetarian Lettuce Wraps. This appetizer has  just 180 calories in a 1/3 dish serving. Don't enjoy wrapping things in lettuce? Order the Steamed Vegetable Dumplings.  A whole dish has just 220 calories and 3g of fat! Go, P.F. Changs!

You can't go wrong with SHRIMP COCKTAIL. Not only is this classic appetizer low-cal, low fat and low-carb, but it's also a great source of protein and Omega-3s.  And cocktail sauce is diet-friendly, too.  So shrimp it up!

STEAMED ARTICHOKES are a perfect option.  Just dip 'em in salsa as opposed to butter or mayo. They last a long time, are fun to eat and they're also very low in calories.

Want something filling that won't wreck your diet? Try a few CHICKEN SKEWERS -- but make sure they're skinless and not smothered in lots of sauce.


Whether your appetizer has 300 calories, or 3,000, you'll minimize the damage if you split it with a friend or two (or, in the case of Outback's Cheese Fries, 40).

Warning: Step away from the Cheese Fries! Tempted to order a greasy appetizer when you're out at a restaurant? That small fried indulgence can add not just hundreds, but thousands, of calories to your meal!  For example, the Cheese Fries appetizer at Outback Steakhouse contains a shocking 3,000 calories and 217 grams of fat! YIKES!!! You don't need that many calories in a whole day, let alone as a pre-meal starter.  Gross!
