ASK HUNGRY GIRL

Hi HG,

I'm a HUGE fan of your growing oatmeal bowls. They're so filling and delicious! Is there a way to make them in the microwave? I don't always have time to stand over the pot stirring...

Oatmeal Obsessed

Hi Double O,

Yay, glad you love 'em! Oatmeal is great, but traditional servings are very small and a little sad. By doubling the amount of liquid and the cook time -- which is what HG "growing oatmeal" recipes do -- you get a GIGANTIC portion of oatmeal for the same number of calories.

As for your question, it's one I get every so often. The truth is, HG oatmeal does take some time in the kitchen -- it needs a while to cook, and you have to stir it frequently. So I decided to play around with a microwave version to see if it would work. It DID! Check it out...

HG's Microwave Growing Oatmeal
Entire recipe: 189 calories, 5g fat, 335mg sodium, 30.5g carbs, 5g fiber, 1g sugars, 6.5g protein -- PointsPlus® value 5*

Ingredients:
1/2 cup old-fashioned oats (NOT instant)
1 no-calorie sweetener packet (like Splenda or Truvia)
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. vanilla extract
Dash salt
1 cup Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze

Directions:
Combine ingredients in a VERY large microwave-safe bowl (at least 10-cup capacity -- your oatmeal will bubble up while it cooks!). Mix in 1 cup water. Microwave for 12 - 15 minutes, until thick and creamy, stirring halfway through.

Let slightly cool and thicken. Enjoy!

MAKES 1 SERVING

The oatmeal still cooks for a long time in the microwave, but you don't need to wait for it to boil or stir it as often. Amazing! You can use this method with any HG growing oatmeal recipe. Just don't forget to use a giant bowl. Happy breakfast-ing!

Hi Hungry Girl,

I've been getting your emails for over two years, and I love them! Heading into the holiday season, I know I'll be faced with lots of cocktail parties and open bars. I was wondering, what cocktails do YOU drink?

Holly in Hollywood

Dear Holly,

Thanks for being an HG fan! Much appreciated...

I'm pretty careful when I drink cocktails because they typically contain lots of calories... but I do have some go-to drinks that I partake in when I'm out. The first one is simple: a shot of a fruity vodka mixed with club soda and a splash of juice. My favorite combo is blueberry vodka, club soda, and pineapple juice. For something festive, try raspberry vodka, club soda, and cranberry juice! Each of these cocktails has around 120 calories. I also like to sip a Bloody Mary every now and then. It's fairly low in calories (typically 150 or so!), spicy, and almost like a snack (thanks to tomato juice or the tomato-based drink mix). If I'm in the mood for tequila, I ask for a single shot mixed with club soda and a splash of OJ. Nice and citrusy, and around 120 calories.

BTW, when you're out, don't confuse club soda with tonic water. While club soda is calorie-free, tonic water has as many calories as regular soda! Click for more on that. And check out this Happy Hour Survival Guide for more great info!
