ASK HUNGRY GIRL
Hi HG,
I'm a fast-food fanatic and have been my whole life, but it's finally catching up to me and my waistline. Any helpful tips for the drive thru? How about recipes I can make quickly at home? I love Panda Express and Chipotle.

Hey Melissa,
Fast food can be really hard to resist, especially when you're in a hurry. But if you're smart about your selections, you can enjoy a guilt-free meal almost anywhere. As for DIY dishes inspired by fast food, you're in luck, because we loooooove making over fast food here at Hungryland...
Fast-Food Picks and Swaps Burger-joint basics: Go with a single-patty hamburger or grilled-chicken sandwich, and always skip the mayo. Load up on fresh veggies like lettuce, tomato, onion, etc. Save major calories with a "lettuce bun," or just leave off the top bun half. For sides, go with a small salad (no croutons, light dressing on the side), cut fruit, or (if you absolutely have to have 'em) the smallest size of fries available... Even if that's the kiddie size!
Burger-joint makeovers: This Big Mac swap uses meaty portabellas, and this Whopper do-over is fast and fantastic. Need real beef? This easy cheeseburger is a must. Click for more burger recipes. For sides, my butternut squash fries are the best... although these turnip fries are pretty great, too! And faux-fried onion rings are a Hungry Girl staple.
Chinese-food basics: Broth-based soup is the ultimate meal starter -- low in calories, and so filling. For your main dish, go with steamed veggies and lean protein (shrimp, chicken, or tofu). Flavor it up with a little reduced-sodium/lite soy sauce. If you've gotta have rice, choose the steamed brown kind for a fiber boost. And fortune cookies are a definite DO -- just 25 fat-free calories. Click for more survival strategies. P.S. At Panda Express, try the String Bean Chicken Breast... only 160 calories per serving!
Chinese-food makeovers: There are so many swaps for Chinese food in the HG arsenal! Some of my personal favorites? Sweet & Sticky Sesame Chicken, Mmmm-Mmmm Moo Shu Pork, Shrimpylicious Egg Rolls, and So Low Mein with Chicken. Check out this Chinese Food Tribute, featuring top ingredients to stock up on.
Mexican-food basics: When it comes to protein, go for grilled chicken or shrimp. As for condiments, avoid sour cream and cheese, but load up on salsa and hot sauce. Get guac on the side, and use it sparingly. Mexican-style salads can be excellent choices -- just say no to the tortilla shell, and use salsa in place of dressing. Soft tacos are also smart -- I like to order two, and stuff the insides of one into the other for a super-stuffed taco. And do yourself a favor: Skip the bottomless basket of greasy chips. For Chipotle-specific advice, here's our latest survival guide!
Mexican-food makeovers: For a satisfying meal, try this Double-Stuffed Steak Quesadilla or this Hungry Chick Avocado Burrito. You can even enjoy pork tacos, guilt-free! There are soooo many more. Nachos, taquitos, fajitas... Click!
By the way... I love coffee shops! For picks and skips at Starbucks, you need to check out this guide...
