Beef Up!

We love soy burgers, veggie patties, and portabella mushroom caps as burger swaps... but sometimes, you just want a hamburger made out of BEEF. For those days, we've got this recipe -- there's really no need to hit up that burger joint.

One 100-calorie flat sandwich bun (like Arnold Select/Brownberry/Oroweat Sandwich Thins)
1/2 lettuce leaf
1 slice tomato
4 oz. raw extra-lean ground beef (4% fat or less)
1 tbsp. liquid egg whites (about half a large egg white)
Dash each salt and black pepper
Dash garlic powder
Dash onion powder
1 slice fat-free cheddar or American cheese
1 thin slice onion
3 hamburger dill pickle chips
Optional toppings: mustard, fat-free mayonnaise, ketchup

Split bun into halves, and top the bottom half with lettuce and tomato.

In a medium bowl, thoroughly mix beef, egg whites, and seasonings. Evenly form into a patty about 4 inches wide.

Bring a grill pan (or skillet) sprayed with nonstick spray to medium-high heat. Cook patty for 3 - 4 minutes per side, or until cooked to your preference.

Top patty with cheese and cook until melted, about 45 seconds.

Transfer cheese-topped patty to the bottom half of the bun. Top with onion and pickles, and place the top half of the bun over the stack!

Up-to-No-Good Burger...

Some days, our taste buds just can't be fooled. And there are those among us who just want BEEF every now and then. Not just beef -- a full-on hamburger with melted cheese and burger-y toppings! But instead of grabbing a super-greasy burger loaded with fatty extras that has a massive amount of calories, try our latest recipe. The bun frequently contributes more to a burger's total calorie count than you might think -- we keep it slim and functional with a thin sandwich round. Much smarter! Fat-free cheese also keeps the numbers way down. Then, of course, there's the patty itself -- extra-lean beef is great for burger patties! Finish it off with your own personal selection of guilt-free toppers, and BAM! You've got a sandwich that beats the bun off any fast-food or burger-joint version. Try it and see.
