Bite it! HG-ed Up Juicy Lucy
HG-ed Up Juicy Lucy

The Juice Is Loose!

A beefy patty, seasoned to perfection and oozing with cheese... It's like we conjured this up in our dreams. But we didn't! Someone in Minnesota did; we just HG-ified it... LUCKY YOU!!!

1 light hamburger bun (or HG Alternative)
1 slice fat-free American cheese
4 oz. raw extra-lean ground beef
1/4 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/8 tsp. each salt and black pepper
1/4 cup chopped onion
Optional toppings: ketchup, mustard, pickle slices

Split bun into halves. Chop or tear cheese into small pieces.

In a medium bowl, thoroughly mix beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Form into a ball, and make a large hollow indentation with your thumb (past the center but not all the way through).

Fill hole with the cheese pieces and squeeze meat to seal, enclosing the cheese. Flatten slightly into a thick patty.

Bring a skillet sprayed with nonstick spray to medium-high heat. Cook patty for 4 - 8 minutes per side, until cooked to your preference. Meanwhile, cook onion in the skillet until browned, about 5 minutes.

Place cooked onion on the bottom bun half, and top with cooked patty. Finish with the top of the bun. Bite in!

Fight it! Juicy Lucy, Average

What a Doozy, Lucy...

This burger is a bit of a regional favorite, so we'll give you a little backstory: The Juicy Lucy is a Minnesota classic -- a burger with melted cheese inside the patty. There's an age-old dispute in South Minneapolis as to who invented the sandwich, but that's not really what matters to us. What WE'RE interested in is how to get that oozy, juicy, burger goodness without the outlandish calorie and fat counts. If you wanna re-create this cheese-crammed burger yourself (and really, why wouldn't you?), we suggest you follow our recipe. The beef is super-lean, the bun is nice and light, and the cheese is fat-free. (Fat-free cheese isn't always the best choice in recipes, but it works GREAT here.) A few basic toppers, and voilà... The only thing you have to worry about is the risk of hot cheese oozing down your chin -- careful!

Tomorrow is the first day of August, a.k.a. National Brownies at Brunch Month. Funnily enough, it's also Admit You're Happy Month. We suspect that the two are related -- try out these Nutty-Good PB Brownies and test our theory.
